﴾ No. Rather, you keep calling false the binding that runs and returns (al-dīn). ﴿
Two particles follow one another at the head of the verse. Kallā cuts what precedes and turns the listener back from where he stands; bal breaks off from that and moves to what is actually the case. The first forbids; the second carries across.
And the one questioned had not yet answered. The place of an answer was opened for him at "what set a sliding over you," then his own making was described to him over two verses, and then the check arrives before he has spoken. So what is refused is not some particular answer. It is the position an answer would be given from.
Four verbs of the making have passed, all of them on one singular "you." Then in this verb the pronoun turns over into the plural. The making was addressed to one; the calling-false is ascribed to a group.
And the turn has a meaning that can be read off its place. What went before happens only one by one: nobody is created in a batch or assembled in a row. What comes now runs in a group and gathers strength from it. You are made alone, and you call things false with others.
The root k-dh-b is a sharp muting and then a clinging to what was muted: not concealment merely, but the offering of a muted copy in the place of the original. And it comes on the doubled pattern in the present tense: calling-false is the ascribing of falsehood to a thing, and the present tense marks a continuing act and not one moment.
The verb is made transitive by bi and not on its own. It was not said "you call the dīn false," and the bi fastens the act to its object: the calling-false is attached to it and pulled tight against it, not passing over it.
The root d-y-n is a holding that settles, then extends pliantly, then sends back. From it come dayn, what is fixed as an obligation and runs on until it is recovered, and dāna, to bind and to hold to account. So dīn is three joined meanings: what binds, what one is held to account for, and what one is requited with.
And it arrives here definite and absolute, with no day attached to it. Later in the same Surah it comes in construct: "the day of the dīn." So what is called false here is not an appointment whose date is denied. It is the whole arc: that there is something that binds at all, and that what has run has a return. And whoever denies the return has denied that what he sent forward and what he held back have anywhere to be waited for.
Two particles at the head: kallā cuts and turns back, bal breaks off toward what is the case, and the check falls before the one questioned has said anything, so what is refused is his position and not his words. Then the pronoun turns from the singular "you" to the plural: a person is made singly and calls things false with others. Tukadhdhibūna, from k-dh-b, a sharp muting and then a clinging to what was muted, the offering of a muted copy in the place of the original, on the doubled pattern and in the present tense that marks continuation, and made transitive by bi so that the act is fastened to its object. Al-dīn, from d-y-n, a holding that settles and extends and then sends back: what binds, what one is held to account for, and what one is requited with. It comes absolute, with no day attached, so what is denied is the arc itself and not its date. Whoever refuses the return has refused that what he sent forward and held back has anywhere to be waited for.
﴾ Non.
