﴾ And over you, most surely, there are keepers whose enclosing lets nothing slip (ḥāfiẓīn). ﴿
Just before this, the denial has been spoken: "No; rather, you call the binding false." What follows is not an argument. It is a connecting wa, then inna which affirms, then a second lām on the predicate which affirms again what inna already affirmed. Two emphases inside three words.
And what is affirmed is not news of something awaited. The sentence is nominal, not verbal: there is no verb in it to begin and to end. It reports a standing condition now, not an occurrence due later.
Denial does its work in the chest. What is above the chest is out of its reach. Refusing the report alters what is in the heart; it does not alter what stands over it.
ʿAlā is the particle of being over. Whatever it governs is placed underneath it, not beside it. The m that closes the word makes the addressed a plural group: over you, not over people in general.
And the place is put before the name. The speech would have run just as well as "and indeed there are keepers over you." Instead the adverbial comes first, so the one addressed hears where before he hears who. Fronting narrows the direction and shuts every other one.
So this keeping is not in a place one travels to, nor in a time one waits for. It is where the standing man stands, above his head. And what is above the head is not left behind by changing ground.
The root ḥ-f-ẓ is a holding-in of an interior through which a channel is cut, and then a covering pressed down over it. So keeping here is not watching from a distance and recording what was seen. It is a sealed enclosing from which nothing drops out, like a vessel covered over what it holds so that not one drop evaporates from it.
And the word arrives indefinite and plural. No name for them, no number, no side, right or left. The plural says "more than one" and then stops; the indefiniteness refuses identification. The reading halts where the verse halted.
The same word is denied elsewhere with the same particle: "and they had not been sent over them as keepers." There, "over them, keepers" is negated; here, "over you, keepers" is affirmed. So the word does not name a kind that some beings are and others are not. It names a position in a relation: whoever is set in that place is a keeper, and whoever is not set in it is no keeper, however he may claim it.
The denial is answered without dispute: a wa, then inna, then a second lām above it, and a nominal sentence reporting a standing condition rather than an event. Then the place is fronted over the name, so that "where" is heard before "who" and the direction is closed to the above. Then the one standing in that place is named from ḥ-f-ẓ, an enclosing sealed over what it holds, indefinite and plural, without name, number, or side. The verse fixes a position and withholds the identity of who fills it. Whoever called the report false took nothing away from what stands over him.
