﴾ And those who were given the Book did not divide except after the Clear Sign had come to them. ﴿
Had it been said, "and those who were given the Book did not divide before the Clear Sign came to them," the sense would have been: they were united, and then they fell apart. But the verse says the opposite: they did not divide except after it came to them. So they were not united before the Clear Sign. They were in a state, as the first verse said, munfakkīn, that is, they were not coming unstuck, they were lying still in their condition. Neither the parting nor the union had happened. Stillness was everything.
And the Clear Sign broke the stillness, so some of them came out into acknowledgement and some into denial. That coming-out is itself what "they divided" names. It is not a dividing between one who trusts and another who trusts; it is the parting of the one who answered from the one who did not. And the stances that would never have shown without the disclosure showed by the disclosure.
The passive form "they were given" puts the holding of the Book in the hand of the one it was handed to, not in the hand of the one who earned it. A giving is a grant, not an owning. So the Book in its holder's hand is a trust and not an earned right. And therefore, when the Clear Sign comes, it uncovers who discharged the trust and who kept it for himself.
And in al-Baqara: ﴿الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْرِفُونَهُ كَمَا يَعْرِفُونَ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ﴾, "those to whom We gave the Book know it as they know their own sons." The knowing was already standing. The charge is not a failure to grasp, it is in what comes next: ﴿وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِّنْهُمْ لَيَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ﴾, "and a party of them conceal the truth while they know." The dividing here is the child of that concealing: whoever knew and did not speak, when the Clear Sign came like a smelting heat, came out in a row other than the row of those who spoke.
Disclosure, at its deep base, parts. It does not gather. The weight of a heart shows under its light. And what was hiding in the calm is uncovered. Whoever was hoping the truth would reach him in a shape that spares him the choosing finds it in a shape that draws the choosing out of him.
And this is a law across the whole Book. Every clear sign parts. Every sign sorts. It does not sort by force, but by what it is: an appearing that pierces, and a covered heart meets it in one of two stances only, acknowledgement or recoil.
And the verse closes on what it does not say outright: the fault is not in the Clear Sign, it is in the heart that receives it. And what the light does not gather, nothing gathers.
The verse overturns what the reader expected. He was waiting to be told: when the Clear Sign came to them, they came together. And the answer runs the other way: they divided. "They were given the Book" is a passive: they did not earn the Book, it was handed to them, and they stand in the place of the receiver. "They divided" (f-r-q) is on the tafaʿʿala form, which carries effort into the act: a dividing meant and chosen, not an unmeant drifting. "Except after the Clear Sign had come to them" (b-y-n): the exception that fixes the timing overturns the expected logic. The Clear Sign ought to have united them, and instead it unbound them into facing rows. Disclosure parts. The stances that lay covered in the state of fixity came out with the Clear Sign.
