Commentary
The wording "Abraham raised the foundations of the House" carries a deliberate tension of sense: foundations are laid down into the ground, they are not raised, so how is "he raises" said of what is founded in the depth? The answer lies in the structure of the Qur'an itself: ﴿كَشَجَرَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ وَفَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاءِ﴾, "like a good tree, its root firm and its branch in the sky", and ﴿فِي بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ اللَّهُ أَن تُرْفَعَ﴾, "in houses God has permitted to be raised". What is fixed into the ground with a pure intent has its truth reach the sky. And the raising in the verse is an announcement carried under the words that the building has been accepted: God raised its foundations in the world of meaning when He accepted it. So the movement upward is not measured by a physical height but by how far the act travels into a divine acceptance.
"The foundations" is the plural of qāʿida, from the root (q ʿ d), whose nucleus q-ʿ is a deep strength coming into view, and then the dāl is a holding and a stretching that fixes it. So a foundation is a firm setting in the depth out of which the visible comes up and settles. From this root came ﴿وَالْقَوَاعِدُ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ﴾, "the women who have settled", who are fixed in their places and do not stir from them, and qaʿada, of the one who keeps close and does not leave. So the foundations of the House are not merely a first course of stone; they are the divine depth out of which everything built above them comes up. And from here comes the warrant for the raising: what wells up out of a deep firm setting deserves to be called raised even while its face lies in the ground.
"Accept" is from the root (q b l), whose nucleus q-b is a depth out of which what rises comes into view, and then the lām is an attachment that clings. So acceptance is a receiving from the depth that holds fast to it. And when Abraham and Ishmael ask "our Lord, accept this from us" while they are in the thick of the building they were commanded to raise, they are declaring that an act issuing from a divine command is not content with its craftsman's completion until God receives it. The visible craft stays incomplete as long as the source has not taken it in at its depth. And this is the courtesy of every work done for God: a building is true by the measure of what it is turned toward, not by the measure of how well it is executed.
The verse put Abraham first in name and in act, then joined Ishmael by a conjunction. This order does not deny Ishmael's partnership in the commitment, since his partnership was established two verses earlier, ﴿طَهِّرَا بَيْتِيَ﴾, "keep My house clean"; it shows instead the structure of the guiding for which Abraham was made in ﴿جَاعِلُكَ لِلنَّاسِ إِمَامًا﴾, "I am making you a guide for people". The guide is set first in the mention as he is set first in the act, and being alongside does not cancel a going ahead. This architectural order in the verse is a mirror of the functional order: the guide leads the row, and the one who helps holds his own place with nothing taken from his share.
The two of them sealed their prayer with two names standing far from the visible scene: "the one who hears, who knows". The building is a seen thing, and had they said "the one who sees", it would have fallen straight into place. But the choice of "the one who hears" uncovers that their request does not bear on the visible structure but on the hidden intent: the one who hears what is not said, the one who knows what is not seen. It is as though the two were saying: we know that You see the stone, and what we ask is that You take in what is in our hearts, which no one sees but You. And with this the building turns from a sensible product into a long prayer, and the masonry turns into a confiding. This is the structure of an accepted work: an inward that is raised, and an outward that leans upon it.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the raising of the foundations in this verse is a structure of sense announcing God's acceptance of the building, and "accept this from us" settles that an act is not made true by its craftsman's completion but by the source's receiving of it. The craft is a function, the intent comes before the structure, and the acceptance comes before the completion.
The wording ﴿يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ﴾, "Abraham raised the foundations", carries a deliberate tension of sense: foundations, from q-ʿ-d, are a firm setting in the depth out of which the visible comes up and settles, and they are not raised in the sensible meaning, so how is it said that he raises them? The answer is in that same structure: what is fixed into the ground with a pure intent has its truth reach the sky, so the raising is an announcement carried under the words that the building has been accepted. And Abraham in the verse is set first in name and in act while Ishmael is joined by the conjunction, which is no lessening of the partnership established by the dual form two verses earlier, but an embodying of the structure of the guiding: the guide leads the row, and the one who helps holds his place with nothing taken from his share. And against what would be expected of a builder finishing an immense work, the two did not seal with "the one who sees", who sees the structure, but chose ﴿السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ﴾, "the one who hears, who knows": hearing, from s-m-ʿ, is a receiving that carries the intent back to the one who meant it and not the bare arrival of a sound, and the knowing is of what is not seen. It is as though the two were saying: You see the stone, and what we ask for is the acceptance of what is in the hearts, which no one sees but You. With this the masonry turns from a sensible product into a long prayer, and a craft is made true not by how finely it is worked but by the source's receiving of it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as the building of the foundations of the House by Abraham and Ishmael and their prayer for the work to be accepted.
A root-reading
A principle in any religious or human work: craftsmanship needs the acceptance of the source, not merely the mastery of form. A reading that turns the verse into an etiquette for anyone who builds something of value.
Deux lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"Raising the foundations of the House": The elevation that starts from the base
The verse uses the imperfect form yarfaʿu ("raising") to describe a past act. In Arabic, this is called the "narrative imperfect," which brings the scene to life in the reader's present as if it were happening before them. The Qur'an repeats this form in scenes of founding to transfer the reader from a mere historical mention to a renewed presence in every time.
The choice of the verb "raising" (rafʿ) warrants contemplation. The root (r-f-c) denotes elevating a thing from a lower position to a higher one. It did not say "building" or "establishing," but "raising." Elevation in the Qur'an is connected to an act that transforms a thing's position in the cosmos. From it in the Qur'an: ﴿رَفِيعُ الدَّرَجَاتِ ذُو الْعَرْشِ﴾ (40:15, "The Raiser of ranks, Owner of the Throne"), and ﴿وَالسَّقْفِ الْمَرْفُوعِ﴾ (52:5, "And the raised canopy"). Thus, elevation in the Qur'an often concerns what is in a position higher than what people can normally reach.
The foundations (al-qawāʿid) from the root (q-c-d) denote what settles at the lowest position. The position in the verse is a paradox: he raises what is at the bottom. It is as if the Qur'an reveals that the building of the House starts from below, bringing what settles in the earth and raising it to be in its specific position. Raising assumes a priority in the base. No firm building exists except by what starts from the lowest possible position. Whoever wishes to raise a position in their life must reach the foundations first, otherwise what they built in the raised position will collapse.
Abraham and Ishmael together: Father and son in the founding act
The grammatical construction in the verse warrants contemplation. Ishmael's name comes after the verb and the object; it did not say "Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations," but delayed the second name. This choice in its construction reveals a structure: Abraham is the one performing the primary act, and Ishmael is connected to him by conjunction.
This is complemented by what follows in the verse: ﴿رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا﴾ ("Our Lord, accept from us"). The prayer is in the plural form "from us," so both parties are together in the act and the prayer. It is as if the verse reveals a structure: the father performs the act with priority, and the son follows, yet they meet in the prayer with a formula of equality. It does not say in the prayer "Lord, accept from me," but "Our Lord, accept from us." The act is shared in its fruit, even if the hands differed in their share.
The rule revealed by the structure: Founding in the Qur'an often brings together two generations. It is not a single founder who accomplishes the act alone, but a sequence in whose hand the material is transferred from one state to another. In another place, the same stance will be mentioned in its educational form: ﴿فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ﴾ (37:102, "And when he reached with him the age of exertion, he said: O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream"). The father carries the vision, and the son is present in its execution. Cooperation between two generations in a founding act is itself the structure of transferring the trust from one generation to the next. Founding does not continue after the first generation except by a participating stance from the second.
"Our Lord, accept this from us; You are the one who hears, who knows": The prayer that delivers the act into the recipient's possession
The prayer in the verse uses the verb taqabbal on the pattern tafaʿʿul. The root (q-b-l) carries the direction toward a thing by receiving it. The form in taqabbal doubles the reception with a specific act: it is not merely accepting what is presented, but capturing it, retaining it, and letting it settle in its place. Abraham's prayer asks for this taqabbul which makes the act connected to the one from whom it is received.
The matter is a point of structural contemplation. Abraham raises the foundations of the House, which is an act in material, sensible reality. Then he prays for this act to be accepted into his Lord's possession. An act in the Qur'an is not completed by its accomplishment in reality, but by its acceptance by the one to whom it is directed. What the Lord does not accept is deficient, regardless of its apparent position. Therefore, the Qur'an uses the form taqabbal in several places regarding acts that launch from the servant toward his Lord. In Āli ʿImrān: ﴿فَتَقَبَّلَهَا رَبُّهَا بِقَبُولٍ حَسَنٍ﴾ (3:37, "So her Lord accepted her with a good acceptance"). Good acceptance reveals that taqabbul has degrees in the Qur'an.
The conclusion of the prayer ﴿إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ﴾ seals the stance with two names. The Hearer (al-Samīʿ) receives what is said by the tongue, and the Knower (al-ʿAlīm) receives what is in the inner self in terms of intention. The meeting of the two names reveals that acceptance in the verse is connected to both together: what tongues say in prayer, and what souls carry in the inner self. Abraham's prayer does not ask for an outward acceptance with an inward that contradicts it, but an acceptance where the outward and inward meet in a unified image. This is the law of every prayer connected to an act: it is not upright except when it heals the gap between what is spoken and what is concealed.
Dans la Famille d'Imran : ﴿فَتَقَبَّلَهَا رَبُّهَا بِقَبُولٍ حَسَنٍ﴾ (3:37, « Son Nourricier l'accueillit alors d'un bel accueil »).
La conclusion de la prière ﴿إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ﴾ scelle la posture par deux noms.
