﴾ O you who have trusted, be mindful of Allah with the full right of mindfulness due to Him, and do not die except while you are submitting. ﴿
The call opens a direct address, and "you who" links those addressed to the very act by which they are known: they trusted. Trust, from ʾ-m-n, is a cutting that knits together in an inward holding and then passes into settledness. It is a prior act summoned up to carry the charge that is coming, not a bare name for a group. The past tense does not close the course at a moment already gone, because the call asks the people of trust for a movement in the present. The one called is known by a response and is then called to keep that response safe.
The command is in the plural, and its object is the name of Allah directly. In w-q-y, the joining knots in the depth and then softens as it extends around the one to whom it belongs, so that guarding becomes a keeping that binds a person to what preserves him. The iftiʿāl form in "be mindful" brings the doers deliberately into the movement of guarding, whose facing toward Allah Himself remains both its measure and its end.
"The full right" stands in the accusative to govern the manner in which the command is carried out, and "of mindfulness due to Him" is then annexed to the pronoun that refers to Allah. The term "right," from ḥ-q-q, denotes a holding that knots a knitting in the depth, made firm by the repeated qāf; that is, a thing standing fixed at its own measure. The construction therefore regulates the guarding by its completeness and assigns the measure of that completeness to the One the pronoun names.
The conjunction joins a prohibition to the command, and the emphatic nūn weighs down the end of the verb so that the demand does not pass lightly. Death, from m-w-t, is a stretch that lengthens and is then cut off at its end and comes to rest; it is the limit at which a person's work is cut off. The wording does not command anyone to choose the hour of death; it fences in the state in which alone that limit should be met. "Except" lifts one single state out of the general prohibition, and so ties the ending to the continuance of what follows it.
The wāw here is the wāw of state, and "you" confronts those addressed with their own selves at the last limit. In s-l-m, the joining runs toward a direction and knits together after having been open to shattering, so the movement comes to rest in a submitting that is held. "Submitting" presents a group that keeps gathering its direction, so the charge extends from the call of those who trusted to a state that accompanies them: a guarding at its full right, and a submitting that carries them across to the limit.
The call summons up the act of trust so that it may carry a command of guarding directed toward Allah. "The full right of mindfulness due to Him" keeps that guarding from falling short or turning into a name without measure, because the standard of its completeness is annexed to the One the pronoun names, so how far the guarding reaches is left to Him and not to the reckoning of the one who practises it. The composition then reaches the limit of death with an emphatic prohibition and exempts the state of submitting alone, and the trust summoned at the opening of the address extends, as a real guarding and an active state, to the end of the course.
