﴾ As for those whose faces whitened, they are in Allah's mercy, remaining therein. ﴿
The conjunction joins the second "as for" to the detailing of the faces that blackened, completing the opposition that the preceding day had opened, and the relative expression defines its bearers by its own clause: their faces whitened. Whitening, from b-y-ḍ, is an appearing that spreads over the face of a thing until it covers it all, and the colour form conveys entry into the colour and its intensification. The singular feminine verb with the plural "faces" follows the usage of the nonhuman plural, and the attachment of the faces to them fixes the place of the event as a sign that befell them.
The connective binds the relative clause to its answer, and "in Allah's mercy" is placed before the pronoun that follows; the preposition "in" presents mercy as a space that the bearers of those faces enter. In r-ḥ-m, gentleness flows toward an interior that gathers in the one who enters and holds close to him, so that mercy becomes an encompassing that receives them. Its attachment to Allah fixes both the source of that space and its ownership.
"They" follows the fronted predicate to gather the bearers of the clause into the judgment without letting them dissolve into the description of their faces. The explicit separate pronoun after the preposition and its object removes any doubt about who carries the predicate and returns the persons to the centre of the sentence. The preposition then recurs with a feminine pronoun, "therein," whose nearest stated antecedent is Allah's mercy, and so the listening settles on the mercy that the text named at the head of its answer, and their dwelling becomes the very thing attached to Allah. The repetition moves the judgment from entry into the space to their settled stay within it.
"Remaining" closes the sentence as a predicate of "they." Permanence, from kh-l-d, is a penetration that runs through, attaches and extends, and then becomes fixed under restraint and pressure, so that the residence lengthens without separating from its space. The active participle is plural and conveys an active nature that continues in remaining. The judgment is their being within the mercy in the state of permanence that this description grants, not a moment of contact with it.
The verse completes the detailing of the day, taking the bearers of the faces that whitened from the visible sign of colour to their outcome. The connective brings them into Allah's mercy, and the fronting of the space makes that mercy encompass them. "Therein" then fixes them again in the very noun that was spoken, and the active participle "remaining" conveys a continuing stay. The mercy attached to Allah is the space the verse named and to which it referred its pronoun, so that one sentence gathers the source of the space, the standing of its people, and their permanence within it.
