﴾ Indeed, those among you who turned away on the day the two groups met were only made to slip by Satan through some of what they had earned. Allah has certainly pardoned them. Allah is forgiving and forbearing. ﴿
"Indeed" opens the sentence with emphasis, and its noun is a relative joined to a past verb, "those who turned away." Turning, from w-l-y, denotes a joining that attaches and extends, but the reflexive form turns its bearer toward a direction he takes up or turns aside with, and in this context the sense established is departure. "Among you" is partitive, drawing this group out from inside those addressed and keeping the act with its own bearers. The adverbial "the day the two groups met" names the time by the coming together of two bodies, the meeting knotting the two sides in contact while the gathering holds the individuals within each.
"Only" is restrictive, and the verb follows: Satan made them slip. Slipping, from z-l-l, is a compression that attaches, with the repeated lām intensifying the sliding away from steadiness, and the requesting form carries their being brought into the slip. The agent is Satan, whom the verse names, and the object is the pronoun of the group. The preposition then ties this to "some of what they earned." Earning, from k-s-b, is a deep meeting that enters a fine channel and then attaches to the one who earns, and "some" keeps the measure of the cause within a part of what had attached to them as earning.
The conjunction resumes with a sentence doubly confirmed, by the emphatic lām and by "certainly": Allah pardoned them. Pardon, from ʿ-f-w, is an emerging out of depth that opens a cleft and then leads into a widening, so it carries a passing-over that clears the channel of its obstruction. The agent is the name of Allah, and "them" refers the pronoun back to those who turned away and whom Satan made slip. The order of the sentence keeps responsibility and mercy together: there is a bounded group from whom the turning away occurred and whose slipping was tied to some of their earning, and upon that group the stated pardon then fell.
"Indeed" returns for emphasis, with the name of Allah as its noun and two indefinite predicates after it: forgiving, forbearing. Forgiveness, from gh-f-r, is an inward deep that opens an outlet and then runs as a covering, and the pattern of "forgiving" carries the density of that covering and its continuance. Forbearance, from ḥ-l-m, is an inward narrowing that attaches and then gathers, so it carries a strength that holds back from haste, while the pattern of "forbearing" carries the quality as established. The slip and the pardon thus meet beneath a covering and a granted delay, both attributed to Allah.
The verse marks out a group from among those addressed who turned away on the day the two groups met, with "among you" keeping the act with its own bearers. It restricts their slipping to the act of Satan, tied to some of what they earned, so that "some" preserves both the measure of the cause and its ascription to them. Allah's pardon of that same group is then established, and the two qualities, forgiving and forbearing, close the course with a dense covering that continues and a delay that holds. In this way the slip, the earning, and the pardon remain in a single order.
