Commentary
"Then" orders a sending down after grief. Security, from ʾ-m-n, is confidence entering safety, and "drowsiness" explains it. "Covering," from gh-sh-y, rises from depth and spreads as a veil. Its object is a group "among you," whose partitive force blocks extension to all.
Another group was occupied by themselves and thought of God other than truth. Thought, from ẓ-n-n, envelops and intensifies inward containment through repetition. It is called "the thought of ignorance," a label that describes and exposes the kind of thought itself.
Their question asks whether they possess even anything of the affair. "Say" answers with emphasis: the affair, all of it, belongs to God. Repeated partitives in the question reach the smallest portion, while totality in the answer places the affair in its entirety with God.
They conceal within themselves what they do not disclose to the singular addressee, then say that if they possessed anything of the affair they would not have been killed "here." The demonstrative fixes their present place, and the killing is passive. What was concealed within now emerges as speech linking possession of the affair to killing in that place.
The answer says that even in their houses, those upon whom killing was written would have emerged to their resting places. Emergence, from b-r-z, connects, flows, and exits constriction. Two purpose clauses join the sequence to testing what is in breasts and sustained purification of what is in hearts. The close names God as continuously knowing what breasts contain.
Two distinct groups, a total answer about the affair, exposed concealment, written killing, testing, and sustained purification all end under God's knowledge of inward contents.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as distinguishing the group of security from the group of thought, returning the whole affair to God, exposing concealment, then stating testing, purification, and knowledge.
A reading presenting two groups, answer, and outcome.
A root-reading
Covering (root gh-sh-y) reaches one group, thought (root ẓ-n-n) describes another, concealment (root kh-f-y) emerges as speech, and testing (root b-l-w) and purification (root m-ḥ-ṣ) reach the interior.
A reading following covering into disclosure.
The two readings do not conflict. The first presents the structure; the second discloses inward movements. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Amana, from ʾ m n, is a holding that gathers itself, then closes in contact, then settles inside a hollow that contains it: a stillness retained within, not a calm displayed on the surface. Nuʿās, from n ʿ s, is an inward containment that rises from depth and then narrows the passage finely, a heaviness that shuts the senses without cutting them off. Ghashy, from gh sh y, is a depth that spreads out finely and screens what lies beneath it, a covering extended over its place. All three are one covering that comes down from above.
Facing them in the same verse is a covering that is built from below. Ẓann, from ẓ n n, is a thick closure that settles in the interior, and the repeated nūn doubles its resonance in the hollow. Ikhfāʾ, from kh f y, is a penetration that opens a narrow cleft and then extends inside it, away from the eye. Then come the letters of disclosure. Ibdāʾ, from b d w, is a connection held under pressure that then opens outward; burūz, from b r z, is a connection flowing through and then issuing sharply from its constriction; tamḥīṣ, from m ḥ ṣ, is a gathering that enters inward containment and then closes firmly upon it until what is pure separates out. The qalb, from q l b, is a knot that binds in depth, attaches, and then opens outward, while the ṣadr, from ṣ d r, is a closure that presses through and then flows onward. The whole sentence therefore rests on one balance: coverings that descend, coverings that are manufactured, and a third movement that strips them all.
Second: the scene
The verse begins from after the grief: "then, after the grief, He sent down upon you security, a drowsiness." What is sent down is a stillness and not a weapon. The addressees then divide in two, not by a verdict pronounced over them but by what descended on them and what occupied them: "covering a group among you," and "a group whose own selves had preoccupied them." The first was covered by the descending veil; the second was covered by concern for itself. That second group is described through three consecutive movements: a thought of God other than the truth, named "the thought of ignorance"; a question asking for the smallest possible share of the affair, "do we have anything of the affair?"; and a concealment within themselves of what they do not disclose to the addressee. What was concealed then emerges on their own tongues as a past conditional: "had we possessed anything of the affair, we would not have been killed here." Two answers follow, each opened by "say": the first transfers the affair in its entirety to God, and the second transfers the very place they reckoned a refuge, "had you been in your houses, those upon whom killing was written would have emerged to their resting places." The verse then ends in two purposes joined by the same particle, testing what is in the breasts and purifying what is in the hearts, and closes by making what breasts contain a known thing: "God knows what the breasts contain." All of this runs inside one address to one community: the pronoun "upon you" at the head of the verse takes in both groups together, and at its close the address returns to "your breasts" and "your hearts," taking them both in a second time.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This structure recurs in every group struck by a shared calamity: rest does not descend on the whole line at one time. Some sleep, and some stay open-eyed, reckoning, estimating, and building inside the chest a condition that never occurred. The finer pattern in the verse's ordering is that preoccupation with the self precedes the thought about God, and not the reverse: whoever is occupied by himself begins to measure the ordering of things by the share of the affair he holds, and when he finds no share of it for himself he thinks of the one who orders it a thought other than the truth. That thought then turns into a sentence beginning "had": a past rebuilt inside the chest so as to weigh less than it did. The answer in the verse does not argue with that imagined past; it moves the place of the question twice, once by transferring the whole affair to its owner, and once by showing that the houses themselves are no hiding place, since what is written emerges to its resting place wherever its bearer happens to be. There is a third return in the pattern: hardship works as a sieve before it works as a recompense, disclosing what was in the breasts before it is ever said aloud. That is why the verse moves from dividing the two groups at its head to addressing the whole community at its close: the breasts and the hearts belong to all of them, so the one who slept and the one who stayed awake both enter a single sieve.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The construction "had we possessed anything of the affair, we would not have been killed here" may parallel what cognitive psychologists study under the name counterfactual thinking: after a loss the mind rebuilds an alternative past and says "had it been," finding in that imagined alternative both relief and reproach at once. Those who have written on it observe that the "had it been" grows stronger in proportion to how much decision the speaker believes he held. The verse places both of these side by side in a single order: first the question about a share of the affair, then the conditional after it. This is a possible parallel in the ordering of an inward movement, not a claim that the verse settles a theory of cognition.
The question "do we have anything of the affair?" may also meet what behavioural study calls the illusion of control, the tendency to estimate an actor's share in an outcome as larger than it is, reported by Ellen Langer from experiments on settings of pure chance. What arrests the reader is that the answer in the verse does not correct the estimate but transfers the ownership entirely, "the affair, all of it, belongs to God," and then gives control a tangible image in the houses, making the nearest place reckoned a shelter no barrier against emerging to the resting place. This too is a possible approximation, not a conversion of the verse into a rule of behavioural science.
And the descent of drowsiness upon one group and not another may approach what is described in the study of acute stress about the uneven return of rest once a threat has passed: bodies that settle and sleep, and bodies in which vigilance keeps working after its cause has stopped. The verse describes that same unevenness and then names what occupies those who stay awake: their own selves. For it the difference is not in the body alone but in what had already gathered in the chest. This is an approach to describing the state and not a judgment upon anyone, and it does not replace the fact that the verse makes testing and purification an intended purpose rather than an incidental result.
