﴾ Let not those who disbelieved think that Our granting them respite is good for their own selves. We grant them respite only so that they may increase in burden, and for them is a humiliating punishment. ﴿
The conjunction joins a prohibition, and the emphatic nūn gives weight to the verb "think". Reckoning, from ḥ-s-b, denotes an inner containment that enters a narrow course and then attaches to a result: it carries an estimate that gathers its own premises. The subject is the relative, which its clause defined by the verb "disbelieved", so its limit is an act that proceeded from them and held. The prohibition forbids the precise judgment that comes in the nominalized clause after it, not all thinking.
The clause nominalized by "that", together with its sentence, fills the two objects of reckoning. The relative stands in "Our granting them respite", and respite, from m-l-w, is a gathering that attaches and then issues out extended: it carries a granting of time that leaves the interval open. The majestic plural makes the act Allah's, and the preposition makes them its recipients. The predicate "good for their own selves" is the forbidden judgment: from the length of the respite alone it does not follow that the respite benefits them.
The restriction "We grant them respite only" takes up the same act with exclusivity and insistence. The repetition prevents any confusion between the agent and the recipient, after which the particle of purpose ties the respite to their increase in sin. Increase, from z-y-d, is a compressed packing laid over what was there and then held fast with it, and the iftaʿala form brings them within a growth whose act falls upon them. "Sin", an accusative of specification, names the very genus of the increase; it confines what grows in them to that genus and makes the respite the field of that growth.
The conjunction adds a nominal sentence in which "for them" precedes "punishment". The qualifier "humiliating", from h-w-n, is a lightness of worth that lies within and then breaks out as visible weakness; the afʿala form in the stem of the qualifier carries the cadence of lowering, and its coming as an active participle keeps the humiliation at work in the one who bears it for as long as the punishment stands, rather than as a moment of abasement that passes and is then forgotten. Bringing "for them" forward reserves the outcome to them, and the humiliating nature of the punishment stands opposite the good for their own selves that they had imagined in the lengthening of the respite.
The text forbids those whom the act of disbelief defined to reckon that the respite granted them is good for their own selves. It then takes up the act again with exclusivity, to uncover the purpose it states: so that they may increase in sin. The pronoun of "for them" brings the holders of that disbelief back twice to the position of the one who receives: they receive the respite first, then the punishment is fixed to them at the end, and between the two nothing appears but the increase in sin, the only genus the verse names. The respite remains readable from the particle of purpose that hung it on that increase alone, while the outcome comes in a brief sentence: "for them is a humiliating punishment." So the appearance of a duration that might be reckoned good comes undone, and it is read from the agent of the respite, the particle of purpose, the genus of the increase and the description of the punishment: four limits that the text itself pronounces.
