﴾ Allah would not leave those who give trust upon what you are upon until He distinguishes the corrupt from the good. Allah would not disclose the unseen to you, but Allah selects from His messengers whom He wills. So trust in Allah and His messengers. If you give trust and guard yourselves, then for you is a tremendous reward. ﴿
"Allah would not" opens a negation bearing upon Allah, with the lām of denial placed before the verb of leaving. Leaving, from w-dh-r, whose wāw falls away in the imperfect as it does in yaʿidu, is the opening of a ring from what it held, so that the thing goes on as it is; the negation, however, forbids that those who give trust remain in the state pointed to. "What you are upon" gathers the state of those addressed into a single indication, and the "until" that follows sets it a limit which reveals the direction of the change.
The "until" sets a goal for the state whose lasting is denied: that He distinguish the corrupt from the good. Distinction, from m-y-z, is a sharp piercing that runs between what is stuck together until it parts one from another, and it carries the parting of one side from another. "The corrupt" is the object and "from the good" the side from which it is parted; both are qualities, so that the axis falls upon the quality which the distinguishing makes apparent. The good, from ṭ-y-b, is what spreads out softly and opens outward so that its touch is pleasant; so the mixture of the state ends in the separation of the two qualities.
The conjunction brings back the same negative turn and the lām of denial, with "disclose" as the verb this time. The ifʿāl form makes those addressed its object and ties them to "the unseen," placing the unseen outside what the group reaches. The repeated negation thus separates a distinction that Allah carries through in what is real from any human possession of knowledge of the unseen: they see the trace of the parting without possessing what is hidden in its matter.
The "but" rectifies after the denial of disclosure, with the name of Allah as its subject and the imperfect as its predicate. Selecting, from j-b-y, is a gathering that joins and then extends as it runs, and the iftiʿāl form carries a willed choosing. "From His messengers" keeps the field of the choice within the messengers annexed to Him, and "whom He wills" makes the will its limit. What was withheld from the group becomes a particular choosing whose source is Allah alone.
The "so" produces a command addressed to the group, "trust in Allah and His messengers," and the coordination keeps both terms under the same preposition. "If" then opens two verbal conditions: that you believe and that you guard yourselves. The condition asks for a renewed trust and a deliberate guarding, and its answer follows, "then for you is a tremendous reward," the preposition assigning them the reward as soon as the two acts are realized. The indefiniteness of the reward, joined to the description of tremendousness, opens the recompense onto an amplitude befitting its source.
The text denies that those who give trust remain in the state in which those addressed stand, and it makes the limit Allah's distinguishing of the corrupt from the good. It then places the unseen outside what the group reaches, and rectifies this by the choice Allah makes, from among His messengers, of whom He wills. The bounds are clearly distributed: the distinguishing is Allah's act, the unseen is with Him, the choosing holds to His will; the work of those addressed is to believe in Allah and His messengers and to guard themselves, and when these two are realized a tremendous reward opens for them.
