﴾ He said: my Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), make for me a sign. He said: your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three days except by gesture. Remember your Rabb much, and glorify at evening and early morning. ﴿
Zechariah does not ask for the announcement to be repeated. He asks that a sign be made for it. The word "make," from j-ʿ-l, is a gathering that comes up from depth and then extends, holding onto a determinate state; so making is an intended placing that establishes for a thing a position or a condition. The sign, then, is a marker set down for the promise within time, not a substitute for it.
The sign comes in speech itself: for three days he does not speak to the people except by gesture. Gesture, from r-m-z, is a flowing that gathers into a single indication, after which the vibration of that indication is driven outward to the one who receives it. The exception keeps the silence from being understood as a complete severance: the connection remains, though it has moved from the word to the indication.
The verse sets little speech with the people against much remembrance of the Rabb. Remembrance, from dh-k-r, is a penetration that takes hold of the meaning and keeps it running again and again, so the sign leaves no emptiness behind it. Glorification, from s-b-ḥ, is a continuous flowing that passes through with nothing catching it, while the naming of evening and early morning stretches that presence between the day's two edges.
The sign appears in a change that runs through Zechariah himself, not as a thing placed in front of him for him to look at from outside. The request was "make for me," and the answer came back as "your sign": what will make the promise known touches his tongue, his relation with the people, and the arrangement of his day. In this way the evidence remains joined to the one who receives it; he himself becomes the place of the sign, and he is asked to live it within its bounds rather than to be content with watching it.
Yet the silence does not become an absolute isolation. "Except by gesture" keeps a thin thread with the people, and "three days" makes the change bounded rather than a condition without end. Within that bound the abundance of remembrance opens, together with the two edges of evening and early morning. What is reduced in one channel is turned in another direction, not left as an empty place: the wording narrows while the indication remains, and the presence that joins the servant to his Rabb widens.
Zechariah asked for a sign, and it was made in a change of the instrument of connection: the tongue falls quiet toward the people and the gesture remains, while remembrance and glorification toward the Rabb grow abundant. The sign is an order for three days that redistributes speech and presence, from evening through to early morning, rather than an event standing apart from the one who carries it.
