﴾ That is what We recite to you of the signs and the wise remembrance. ﴿
The verse opens with the singular demonstrative, although what preceded it extended across sayings, acts and a judgment. "That" gathers the whole course into one thing indicated, and the distance implied by the pointing allows room to regard it once it is complete. The verse then moves what has just been said from the rank of what is narrated to the rank of what is recited. The pointing is thus a hinge: it joins what has passed and prepares it for the statement of its source and its nature.
The speech passes to the plural pronoun in "We recite it," so the act of reciting is ascribed to Allah from inside the text, and no intermediary the verse has not named is imported for it. Recitation, from t-l-w, denotes a fine encounter followed by another that joins it, so that the parts come one after another, joined. The pronoun refers this act back to "that," so that the gathered course becomes what is recited. "To you" names the place where the recitation arrives: the saying reaches an addressee upon whom its effect falls, and does not pass through a void.
"Of" follows the verb to show the kind from which this recited thing is drawn: the signs. It places "that" within the wider field of marks, and the verse turns the gaze from their presence toward what they indicate. The plural draws the narrated account out of its isolation, and "of" reserves a place for it among many signs. In this way the preceding course is read as an indicator whose effect continues after its events have ended.
The conjunction joins the remembrance to the signs. Remembrance, from dh-k-r, is a protrusion that touches its place, is then held in a withholding, and lets its effect run on at length, so that it brings into presence what was about to go absent. "Wise" then qualifies it: in ḥ-k-m the space narrows around the meaning, the kāf holds it within, and the mīm then gathers its parts into a firm structure. The faʿīl pattern makes this firmness a settled quality in the remembrance itself, so that it guards what is recited from falling apart.
With the word "that" the verse gathers the preceding course into a unity that can be pointed at, then discloses that this unity is recited from Allah to the one it addresses. The recitation follows its parts one after another until it arrives, and "of the signs" gives it its place within the kind of indication. The conjunction then brings together the mark and the remembrance: an indication that makes present what may absent itself, and a remembrance that carries its firmness in its own structure. So what is said is not severed from the source of its recitation, nor its indication from its remembrance, nor its remembrance from the quality of firmness.
