﴾ Indeed, the likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then said to him, “Be,” and he becomes. ﴿
"Indeed" opens the sentence with emphasis, then places the likeness of Jesus "with Allah" before linking it to the likeness of Adam. Likeness, from m-th-l, denotes an adherence that gathers in a fine density, then extends while attached to one face of resemblance that stands apart from all the other faces. The particle of comparison sets up a facing whose face and limits the rest of the verse explains, while "with Allah" fixes the measure of that facing in the direction the speech itself has stated.
The comparison is followed by the sentence "He created him," which opens the ground of the analogy from within the text. Creation, from kh-l-q, is a penetrating pierce that extends while attached, then knots into a structure that holds together. The pronoun refers to Adam, named just before, so that his coming to be is ascribed to the single agent whom the preceding sentence named. "From dust" names the beginning of the creation: dust, from t-r-b, is parts fully cut off that ran loose, then joined what they met and held fast to it. Thus this side of the analogy is fixed in its created origin.
"Then" places the saying after the mention of creation, without giving the length of the interval or any of its detail. "Said to him" establishes the speaker, the one addressed, and the link of the saying between them, after which the whole saying is compressed into a single word of command: "Be." Being, from k-w-n, is a withholding that grips possibility within, then brings it out from within into appearance. The command asks directly for the existence of what is commanded, describing no instrument, no toil and no duration. By this the likeness goes back to the authority of the saying, the saying through which coming to be passes over into being.
The close comes with the connective that attaches the result to what precedes it, not with the conjunction that would merely join two verbs. "He becomes" is an imperfect verb, so it presents the being as alive to the hearing after "Be," rather than locking it into a past account. Between the command and the verb the same root recurs: k-w-n in the demand, then k-w-n in the realization. The verse adds no independent cause between them; the connective itself is the bridge of the structure, and thus the resemblance that was stated becomes a resemblance in the creation ascribed to Allah and in the saying that carries being to its appearance.
The verse sets up a facing between the likeness of Jesus and the likeness of Adam with Allah, then keeps that likeness from slipping loose toward every face by explaining its course: a creation ascribed to its agent, a beginning named dust, a saying that comes in the word of command, and a being that the connective attaches to it. The weight therefore lies in the ascription of the creation, the saying and the realization to one source, not in a matter that would hold its force of itself. Whatever the verse has not detailed of manner or duration remains outside the reading.
