﴾ Then whoever turns away after that, those are themselves the departing. ﴿
The connective fāʾ builds on the covenant, the affirmation and the witnessing that came just before, and opens no separate subject. "Whoever" (man) is a conditional word, so the door hangs upon the act, not upon a name or a line of descent: anyone who carries the condition enters the answer, and the verse names no individual and no community from outside itself. In this way the long scene of the preceding verse becomes one compressed measure: the bond was fixed, the affirmation was made, the witness stood present, and then attention turns to whoever chooses the movement the condition describes.
Turning away (tawallā), from w-l-y, is an enclosing that binds and clings to a direction and then extends in softness and flowing. The fifth form here, however, makes the doer draw himself into the movement of the turn, so that nearness flips over into aversion. The verb stands in the past tense inside the condition, which presents the movement as already completed by its owner. The verse places it where its sense becomes plain, "after that," meaning after a bond taken and an affirmation declared, and so the turning away is described by where it falls in relation to the covenant, not by how far it goes.
Distance (buʿd), from b-ʿ-d, is a going out from one's place, then an appearing from the depth of the span, and then a standing fast at a limit set apart. Here "after" leans upon the demonstrative "that" and does not stand alone, so the pointing carries back to the covenant with everything held in it: a giving, a confirming, a trust, a support, an affirmation and a witness. The text has no need to repeat the chain, because "that" holds it all gathered in one word. So the turning away is a movement placed after the scene in which the bond was fixed, not an ignorance that precedes the clear statement.
The fāʾ of the answer carries "whoever," singular in its wording, over to "those," in keeping with the breadth of its sense. The separating pronoun "themselves" then presses the description down exactly upon those who did the turning. Departing (fisq), from f-s-q, is a narrow opening that pierces and pushes away and then knots inwardly into a state that stands outside the limit. "The departing" is an active participle, which makes the going out a continuing, acting nature rather than a set of inherited marks. The description has one source, the act the verse has stated: turning away after that.
The verse presses the whole covenant before it into one condition and one answer. The fāʾ ties the ruling to what was already fixed, and "whoever" leaves it open to every doer. The act itself is a turning away that comes "after that," that is, after the bond, the affirmation and the witnessing which the demonstrative carries in a single word. The answer then comes with the demonstrative and the separating pronoun, to press the naming of departure onto those who made that movement. The naming is born of a turning away that follows a covenant borne witness to; it does not set out from an identity.
