﴾ And when Allah took the covenant of the prophets: whatever I give you of Book and wisdom, then a messenger comes to you confirming what is with you, you shall surely trust in him and surely support him. He said: do you affirm and take upon that My burden? They said: we affirm. He said: then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses. ﴿
The scene opens on a bond already taken. The conjunction joins it to what came before, and "when" opens a time in which the act is called back into the present. Allah is the agent, and "the covenant of the prophets" is the object. The term covenant, from w-th-q, denotes a joining that gathers what has thickened and what has scattered and then knots it in the depth with a knot that does not come undone. The choice of "took" places the bond under an act already accomplished, not under a mere possibility. "The prophets" arrives as a plural annexed to the covenant, so the knot itself becomes what gathers them: they are the ones from whom this joining was taken, and it is by this joining that they are identified within the sentence.
The address then turns to the speaker in "whatever I give you of Book and wisdom," and with that turn the source of Book and of wisdom comes into view. In ʾ-t-y, giving runs on until it meets its place in those addressed. "Then" opens a later time in which a messenger comes, and his description, "confirming what is with you," binds the new arrival fast to what is already in their hands. Ṣ-d-q names a firmness that bears pressure and comes out in agreement with what tests it, and Form II makes this confirming a renewed work rather than a single verdict. So the messenger's coming makes the truth of what is with them appear, and the link of the earlier gift remains unbroken.
The emphatic lām and the emphatic nūn enter both verbs and move the two out of expectation into a tightened obligation. In "you shall surely trust in him," ʾ-m-n passes from an inward readiness to a trust fastened onto the messenger by way of the preposition; "and surely support him" then turns that trust into an outward bracing, n-ṣ-r being a supply that rises from an interior, meets a firmness, and runs on toward the one supported. The single pronoun gathers acceptance and aid into one direction. So the covenant opens the earlier gift onto a later response.
After the wording of the covenant comes the direct question: "do you affirm?" Affirmation establishes what was set before them and makes it settle upon its bearer. "And take upon that My burden" is then joined to it, so the act of taking that opened the verse returns, with this difference: those addressed are now the agents, and what they take on is the weight and the bond. The answer is brief and matched to the question, "we affirm," adding no condition to it and altering none of its content; it carries the very same verb over from the asking into the affirmation of those who speak.
The connective binds the affirmation to the command "then bear witness." Witness comes from sh-h-d, whose binding nucleus sh-h is a spreading that fades away into a void; the dāl then presses that presence and fixes it. So the command carries what had been established over into a state that is witnessed and measured. The witnesses are not left alone in it: the nominal sentence "and I am with you" establishes the accompaniment, and "among the witnesses" places the speaker inside the description itself. The active participle makes witnessing a continuing and active nature, and with it the scene closes on a covenant confirmed by affirmation and by the calling of witnesses.
The verse builds its covenant in measured stages. Allah takes the bond of the prophets and opens what He gave them of Book and wisdom onto a messenger who comes confirming what is with them; the answer is trust in him and support for him, both weighted with emphasis. The holders of the covenant are then asked about affirming and about taking the burden upon themselves, and they answer with that very verb. Last of all, the affirmation turns into witness, and the speaker's own accompaniment among the witnesses is joined to it. So the bond does not remain a wording: it crosses from the gift to the confirming, and from there to the obligation and the calling of witnesses.
