﴾ Those, they are the ones who cover over what has shown (al-kafara), the ones who split open and let out what was held (al-fajara). ﴿
Five verses have gone by describing and not naming: a fleeing, an affair, faces that uncover, faces that something falls upon and covers. Then, in the last words, the name is spoken.
And ulāʾika is a pointing at what is far. They are pointed at and not addressed, though in the verses just before they were present faces, there to be seen. The demonstrative pushes away what the description had brought near.
Then humu is a separating pronoun: it falls between the ones pointed at and the predicate, and confines the predicate to them. Nothing after it can add "and others besides them are so too". The name fits those pointed at, and only them.
And k-f-r is a continuous covering that veils what had appeared. From it, the sower kafara the seed when he buried it under earth, and the night kafara the day when it draped it over and hid it. And nothing is covered but what showed first: the root requires a prior appearing.
And f-j-r is a splitting that brings out what was held inside and then runs on unbroken. From it, water infajara when the rock split away and it ran, and fajr is the splitting of the night away from what it had been holding in.
So the two descriptions are opposite motions: a hand that covers what had shown, and a hand that splits and lets out what was held. What ought to have stayed visible is buried; what ought to have stayed held is loosed.
And this word was already spoken in this Surah, as a cry and not a name: "May the human being be struck down, how covering he is." There it was an exclamation over one, defined by his kind; here it is a definite noun, plural and pointed at. The cry returns at the end of the Surah, and it has become a naming.
Five verses describe and do not name, and then the naming falls in the last two words of the Surah. Ulāʾika points at what is far and pushes away what the description had brought near, and humu is a separating pronoun that confines the predicate to those pointed at. Al-kafara, from k-f-r: a continuous covering that veils what has appeared, whence the sower's burying of the seed and the night's draping of the day, and nothing is covered that did not first show. Al-fajara, from f-j-r: a splitting that brings out what was held and then runs on. Two opposite motions in one description: the veiling of what showed and the loosing of what was held. And both words stand on the same build as ghabara and qatara before them, so four words of one pattern close three verses: the two coverings on the face answer, in the fall of the sound, the two namings of its owner. And the Surah closes on the root it cried out with in its middle: what was an exclamation over one human being has become the name of a company pointed at from a distance.
A name for burying what showed and a name for loosing what was held, and both land on the same rhyme as the dust and the rising darkness. The Surah ends by naming, at a distance, what it had been describing up close.
