﴾ And when the holding surfaces that carry writing (ṣuḥuf) have been spread open. ﴿
What stands before this verse is bodies and masses: a sun, stars, mountains, seas, wild creatures. Then the ninth condition arrives, and the act falls on a sheet of writing.
And the wording does not shift when the object shifts. The same "and when," the same verb with its doer unnamed, the same close on a silent final consonant. The sheets are marshalled in the very rank in which "and when the mountains are set moving" was marshalled.
And that by itself is the news: what was written is handled the way what was created is handled. In this place, paper has what a mountain has.
The root ṣ-ḥ-f is a hard holding that contains what lies between its two edges, then a parting that lays what it held out across its own face. A sheet is a surface that grips, and on which writing spreads out line after line.
And the word itself stands elsewhere with a description attached: "in sheets held in honour." There it is indefinite and governed by "in," a container with whatever is put inside it left unnamed. Here it is definite and raised, and it is the thing the verb falls upon. The container that was a setting has become a thing acted on.
And in both places the silence is one and the same: no mention of what is written, no count of the sheets, no owner named. The word names the carrier and closes over what it carries. Whoever wants what is on the sheet has an appointment, and the appointment is its spreading.
The root n-sh-r is the going out of what was held in, out into room, and then a running that extends that going-out so that it halts at no edge. It is the spreading of a cloth after its folding: nothing is added to it and nothing taken from it, and the whole of it is seen at once.
So the spreading writes no line on the sheet. What is written was written before it was spread, and what changed is that the fold was lifted. That is why a verb of laying-open was chosen and not a verb of writing: there is no pen in this place, there is a covering taken away.
And the doer is dropped, as in all the other conditions. The sheets are spread and it is not said who spread them, so the gaze stays where the verse set it, on what is spread and not on the one who spreads. It was the fold that hid, not the ink.
A ninth condition moves the act from masses to paper, and the wording does not change when the object does: the same "and when," the same verb with its doer unnamed. Ṣuḥuf (ṣ-ḥ-f) is a gripping surface across which what parts out is laid, so the word names the carrier and keeps quiet about what it carries, as it kept quiet in "in sheets held in honour," except that there it was a container governed by a preposition and here it is a definite thing the verb falls upon. Nushirat (n-sh-r) is the going out of the folded into extended flatness, so there is no writing in this place and no erasing, only a fold lifted. And what lies between the folding and the spreading is no change in the sheet, but a change in the one who faces it.
Nothing is added to the page on that day and nothing is taken from it. The only thing that happens to it is that it is open.
