Commentary
The root s-m-w is a running that gathers and then binds itself upward. So the sky, in the word itself, is the direction of height and the ceiling of it: whatever rises and shades what lies beneath it.
And it is given no shape here and no material. It arrives definite and single, and then the verb arrives and falls upon it. What the verse hands over about it is one thing only: that it was above us, and that what was done to it is what is done by one drawing off a covering.
The root k-sh-ṭ is the drawing off of a clinging cover from what lies under it, by running an edge between the two. The plainest thing said with it is the drawing of a hide off flesh. There is no breaking in the verb and no folding, only an edge run between two layers that had grown together, and then the upper one taken away.
And that puts the sky in the position of a membrane rather than a building. A membrane is drawn off so that what is under it may appear, so the membrane is not itself the point. The verb says something about the sky, and something larger about what the sky was covering.
Anyone who has seen an animal skinned knows the difference between demolishing and drawing off. Demolition leaves rubble where the building stood; a drawing-off leaves nothing at all where the hide was. It uncovers what lay beneath, and then it is done.
And the verse does not name what appeared. But it does not stand alone: after it come "and when the massed fire is made to blaze up," then "and when the covered garden is brought near." Two hidden things become two things seen.
So the order itself reads the verb: the screen is drawn off first, then two are named that had been behind it. In none of the three verses is anything brought into being that was not there. There is a screen lifted, a flame raised on what had gathered, and a far thing brought close.
And the ceiling that used to hide is handled the way a hide is handled. What is over your head is not the last thing there is.
The sky (s-m-w) is what gathers and binds and rises, the ceiling above the head, and it arrives definite with no shape and no material described. Kushiṭat (k-sh-ṭ) is the drawing off of a clinging cover by running an edge between it and what lies under it, as a hide is drawn off flesh: no breaking and no folding. The verb makes the sky a membrane and not a building, and a membrane is drawn off only so that what is behind it may appear. Which is why two hidden things follow it and become things seen: "and when the massed fire is made to blaze up," and "and when the covered garden is brought near." A ceiling is drawn off, and nothing is left in its place to look at; what is left is the looking through.
A roof turns out to have been a lid, and a lid is only ever there to come off.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Kushiṭat is read as the removal of the sky and its rolling up, and the report is taken as a description of the end of the upper world. In modern renderings it is often paired with descriptions borrowed from astronomy: bodies scattering, or space folding in. The familiar rendering runs: "And when the sky is stripped away."
A reading that turns the report into a description of celestial bodies and completes it with what the wording does not hold.
A root-reading
Al-samāʾ (s-m-w): a gathering that binds and rises, the direction of height and its ceiling, and it arrives with no shape and no material described. Kushiṭat (k-sh-ṭ): the drawing off of a clinging cover from what lies under it, by running an edge between the two, as a hide is drawn off flesh. There is no breaking in the verb, no folding, and no account of any body; the sky stands in it where a membrane stands, drawn off so that what is beneath may appear. What follows bears this out: two hidden things become things seen.
A reading that takes its picture from the letters of the verb and from the order of the verses after it.
The two readings do not conflict. The first describes the scene and completes it; the second counts what the wording actually holds and stops there. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

The verse chose the verb of skinning out of all the verbs available. Had demolition been meant, a verb of demolition would have come; had folding been meant, a verb of folding. What came is a verb that cannot be pictured without two things having clung together, and cannot be pictured without something appearing once it is done.
There is a side of this that belongs to the one looking. A cover does not hide itself; it hides from an eye beneath it. When it is drawn off, what lies behind it has not changed. What changed is where the looker stands with respect to it. That is the human share in this report: there is nothing in it about something newly made.
And the verse takes its place in the file it belongs to. Twelve conditions follow one another, and in every one the verb falls on the thing named, and then the answer arrives: "a soul knew what it had brought present." So the drawing-off is one link in a chain that ends at a soul's knowledge of itself, not a spectacle wanted for its own sake.
Perhaps something people know about themselves brings this picture nearer. Human sight has a limit it does not pass, and hearing has its own, and whatever knowledge of what lies above has accumulated for the human being accumulated each time some barrier was taken off an instrument of looking, not each time the thing looked at changed. It may be that what stands between a person and what he cannot see is not a wall to be knocked down but a thin membrane clinging to the very instrument of sight. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse described the sky with no shape and no material, named nothing that appears once the drawing-off is done, and settled nothing about the composition of any body.
