Commentary
The verse opens with a fāʾ that joins it to what came before as a result is joined to its cause. What preceded was transgression in the lands, and this fāʾ draws out of that transgression its fruit: the matter did not stop at overstepping; something more far-reaching followed from it. The fāʾ here reveals that corruption is the offspring of transgression and its terminus, and adds no fresh, separate report.
This sequencing makes the verse a link in a descending chain: a power that oversteps its limit, then multiplies in the earth what spoils it. The fāʾ binds the two links together, so neither is read apart from the other.
Aktharū, "multiplied," is from the root k-th-r, whose core is the opposite of fewness: a gathering that keeps increasing and brims past the bound. Akthara, on the pattern afʿala, is to make a thing many and to add to it; it is said of one who pressed on and doubled until it overflowed, not of one who acts once. The verb pictures a hand that pours and adds and is not content with a measure, as if it were seeking the overflow itself.
What was multiplied here is corruption: they multiplied what destroys, and neither building, nor sowing, nor knowledge. The power that had room at its disposal spent that room in heaping up what undoes. The verb places the blame on the deliberate doubling of corruption until it fills the place; its mere occurrence does not account for the blame.
Fīhā, "therein," refers back to the lands already named, and the particle fī ("in") makes the ground a vessel that holds the corruption: the ground was filled with it, as a container is filled with what it contains, and the corruption did not come down upon its surface in passing. The place that had been the field of power became the field of what spoils it.
The root f-s-d turns on a thing's coming undone from the form by which it is sound, and its slipping out of balance into ruin. One says fasada al-ṭaʿām, "the food spoiled," when it has changed from its soundness, and fasada al-amr, "the affair spoiled," when its order has come apart and no use comes of it. Corruption is the undoing of soundness from within a thing, not a breaking of it from without. The verse brings together the multiplying, the containing and the coming undone: a hand that doubles, a ground that fills, and a matter coming undone from its soundness.
The verse opens with a fāʾ that sets the result upon its cause, drawing out the fruit of the transgression that came before. The root k-th-r denotes a gathering that keeps increasing and brims over, and aktharū is a deliberate doubling that is never content. Fīhā, "therein," makes the ground a vessel holding what was poured into it. Corruption, from f-s-d, is a thing's coming undone from its soundness from within, not a breaking from without. So the verse pictures a power that overstepped its bound and spent its room multiplying what undoes the soundness of the place, until the ground was filled with a matter coming undone; this is the link after which comes the pouring of punishment, a recompense that fits.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"And they multiplied corruption therein" is read as a report about the peoples named just before (ʿĀd, Iram, Thamūd, Firʿawn): they transgressed in the lands, and so multiplied wrongdoing, denial, sins, and killing in them, until their corruption pervaded the earth. The pronoun "therein" refers back to "the lands" in the preceding verse. This multiplying is what called down the pouring of punishment upon them in the verse that follows.
A reading that fixes the doers among the peoples named just before, and details the forms of their corruption.
A root-reading
Akthurū (root k-th-r): making a thing many and doubling it until it brims past the bound, not an act that falls once. Fīhā: the particle fī ("in") makes the ground a vessel that holds what is poured into it. Al-fasād (root f-s-d): a thing's coming undone, from within, from the form by which it is sound, not a breaking from without. And the fāʾ sequences this upon the prior transgression as a result upon its cause. The verse becomes: "So it followed from their overstepping that they doubled in the earth what undoes its soundness, until it was filled with it."
A reading that hears the multiplying as a brimming doubling, corruption as an undoing from within, and the ground as a vessel that fills.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the doers and details the forms of corruption; the second hears, in both roots, the shape of a brimming multiplication and an undoing from within. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
The fāʾ sequences the corruption upon the transgression as a result upon its cause: a power that overstepped its limit in the land, and its fruit was that it multiplied in it what spoils it. Corruption in the verse is not a separate event; it is the offspring of the overstepping and its terminus.
And the place of aktharū in the verse is the place of a doubling that brims past the bound, as the root k-th-r showed. The thing blamed is not corruption occurring once but its deliberate multiplication, until it fills the place and becomes the thing that prevails over all else.
The root f-s-d makes what was multiplied an undoing from within: the land was not broken from outside but spoiled at its core, until it slipped out of the form by which it is sound. The power that held room spent it undoing the soundness of what lay under its hand, and this is the link the pouring of punishment follows.
It may be that the pairing of "multiplying" with corruption points to a pattern that recurs whenever power gathers in one hand and brims past its bound: the room that no limits hold may turn from building into undoing, for it seeks more and finds nothing to add except at the cost of the soundness of what is around it. And perhaps the placing of aktharū before al-fasād hints that the multiplying itself is the malady: not merely that a little corruption in the land grew large, but that the hunger to multiply without limit is what undoes the soundness of the place from within. This, if it holds, makes the verse a reading of the fate of every power that brims past its bound, not only a report of a people now gone.
Tadabbur
