﴾ So on that Day none punishes as He punishes, none at all. ﴿
The fāʾ at the head of the verse is a fāʾ of sequence, tying the answer to what comes before it with no opening left between them. Yawmaʾidhin ("on that Day") is an adverb of time built by annexing yawm ("day") to idh ("when"), that is, the day on which the event already mentioned comes to pass. The root y-w-m turns on the time that stretches from a beginning to an end and gathers the event into its span, so that a day is a drawn-out stretch holding all that runs within it. The tanwīn upon idhin stands in place of a clause left out and already spoken, so it is a day fixed by what came before it and not by a name of its own.
The adverb therefore binds this verse to a scene that came before and hangs what follows upon it: when that falls out, this falls out. Setting the adverb ahead of the verb that governs it makes the time itself the standing ground on which everything after it is raised, so that what is said is said only within the span of that very Day.
The root ʿ-dh-b turns on a painful withholding and confining: a severe grip that pierces and so holds and bars what is desired. The doubling of the dhāl in yuʿadhdhibu multiplies the act and makes it last, a confining after a confining that does not come loose. Then comes the verbal noun ʿadhābahu ("His punishing"), annexed to the pronoun of the One who inflicts it, so that the verb is weighed by its own verbal noun: a punishing that is His alone, and not the punishing of another.
Annexing the verbal noun to the pronoun moves the speech from the bare occurrence of punishment to its manner and its measure. What is meant is that no one's punishment reaches this particular punishment, not that no one punishes. The negation falls upon the likeness and not upon the root of the act, and the verbal noun is the limit of comparison that every other punisher falls short of.
Aḥad, from ʾ-ḥ-d, points to the single one, alone, with no second of its kind. Its falling as an indefinite within a context of negation, "none punishes... none at all," yields the sweeping of the whole field: not one at all of those conceivable as punishing reaches the measure of this punishment. The word sweeps away every possibility and leaves no exception standing.
The placing is exact in directing the agent: aḥad is the agent of yuʿadhdhibu, so what is denied is that anyone should have a punishing like His punishing on that Day. The verse thus sets that punishment apart, alone, from every kind of punishment known in this world, and puts it above all comparison, singular as the singularity of the One to whom it belongs.
The fāʾ ties the answer to what came before, and yawmaʾidhin (y-w-m) is an adverb that binds the saying to a Day fixed by what was already mentioned, so that what is said is said only within its span. The verb yuʿadhdhibu (ʿ-dh-b) denotes a painful confining made successive by the doubling of the dhāl, and its verbal noun ʿadhābahu, annexed to the pronoun, makes the negation fall upon likeness and not upon the root of the act: no other's punishment reaches this particular punishment. Aḥad (ʾ-ḥ-d), an indefinite within a context of negation, sweeps every possibility, so that not one reaches its measure. The verse therefore sets that punishment apart above all comparison, singular as the singularity of the One who brought it to pass.
