Commentary
"He says": an utterance that comes out when uttering no longer avails. The verb is yaqūlu, from the root q-w-l, which turns on bringing a meaning out voiced, an utterance that passes from within to without and is heard. It is in the imperfect here, recounting a state that keeps renewing itself, "he says" rather than "he said," as though the speaker were still repeating his word without breaking off. The saying pushes nothing away and brings back nothing of what is gone; it only brings out what the breast holds of a grief that has reached the point of speaking.
A saying that comes in this place bears witness against itself before it bears witness against anyone else: there is no claim left in it and no arguing, only an admission that comes out overpowered. The same uttering that yesterday said other things has today become a vessel for regret. This is the overturning of the state: one tongue, and two stands.
"O would that I": a calling out to what cannot be called. Layta is a particle of wishing that asks for the impossible, fastening on what there is no way to bring back. The vocative yā set upon it adds to its brokenness, as though the speaker were calling out to an absent state and crying for help to a past that does not answer. The wish here is no hope left open on a deed still possible; it is a turning back toward a door that has been shut.
The speaker's own yāʾ in laytanī, "would that I," turns the grief back upon its owner alone: he blames nothing outside himself and loads it on no one else; he only stands before himself with what he let slip. A wish in the speaker's own person is regret at its most truthful, for its owner knows that the one who squandered is the very one who now wishes.
"I had sent something forward" denotes a sending out ahead of time. The verb is qaddamtu, from the root q-d-m, which turns on going first in place or in time, setting a thing at the front so that it goes ahead of others. The doubled dāl in qaddama strengthens the act and makes it a deliberate sending: the deed is dispatched ahead of its doer to a time in which he will meet it. What is wished for, then, is a provision sent on ahead, and neither wealth to be gathered nor a trace left behind at the back.
The wish falls on qaddamtu in the past form, "would that I had sent something forward." So the door wished for now was open in a time gone by. Sending forward is possible only before the appointed time; when the appointed time arrives, the door of sending forward closes altogether. Here the two griefs meet: the meagreness of what was sent ahead, and the running out of the time for sending.
"For my life": the life that is given the name of life. The root ḥ-y-y turns on standing, growing, and holding death off; the living is the opposite of the dead, and life is a frame that pulses and lasts. The li in li-ḥayātī is the li of purpose and aim, "I sent forward for the sake of my life," not within my life. The life meant is an end worked toward, not a span worked within.
Annexing the life to the speaker, "my life," while it is the very thing sought by the sending forward, reveals that the speaker gives the name of his true life to what he is coming toward, not to what he left behind him. It is as though what he lived was not, in his reckoning, a life worth the name, and life were rather the one he now meets, having come to it without provision. The naming itself is a verdict on the two times: what passed was a passage, and what he is coming upon is the life.
The speaker utters what avails nothing (q-w-l: bringing a meaning out voiced, in the imperfect, renewing itself as grief), with a particle of wishing that asks for the impossible, broken further by the call yā and turned back on its owner by the speaker's yāʾ. What is wished for is "I had sent something forward" (q-d-m: a sending ahead of time, made deliberate by the doubled dāl), in the past form, because the door of sending forward shuts when the appointed time arrives. The aim is "for my life" (ḥ-y-y: a frame that pulses and lasts), with the li of purpose, so life is an end one sends ahead for, not a span one lives within. So the verse gathers three griefs into one utterance: a saying without effect, a wish without answer, and a sending forward whose time has gone by; its last word reveals that the speaker named his true life only when he met it without provision.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read in the setting before and after it: when the earth is crushed, the command comes, and the Fire is brought forth on that Day, the human being remembers, but the remembrance avails him nothing, and he says in regret, "would that I had sent forward for my life." The common reading takes "the life" here as the lasting life to come, and the speaker wishes he had worked in this world for a righteousness that would profit him on the Day of standing. The inherited reading also has it that qaddamtu means "I hastened to do good and did not put it off until it was past."
A reading that fixes the appointment as the Day of standing and glosses "the life" as the lasting life to come.
A root-reading
Yaqūlu (root q-w-l): an uttering that brings meaning out voiced, in the present tense, renewing itself, a saying that pushes nothing away. Yā laytanī: a particle of longing for the impossible, deepened by the vocative yā, turned back on the speaker by the -ī. Qaddamtu (root q-d-m): a sending ahead of one's time, made deliberate by the doubled dāl, in the past tense because its door shuts when the appointment falls due. Li-ḥayātī (root ḥ-y-y): a frame that pulses and lasts, and the li is the li of purpose, so the life is an end worked toward. The verse: a renewing utterance of grief, over a sending whose time has run out, toward a life the speaker names his own only as he meets it without provision.
A reading that hears in the roots an utterance that avails nothing, a sending-forward whose door has shut, and a life that is the end and not the span.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes the appointment and names the life sought; the second hears, in the roots, the structure of regret over a sending whose time has run out. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
Place in the Surah's sequence
This word falls at the close of a sequence that began with oaths, passed over peoples now gone, then turned the gaze back to the human being in his ease and his narrowness, until it ended at the scene of the appointment. The verse is the self's utterance at that appointment: no arguing, no claim, only a longing turned back upon its owner. The Surah that opened by swearing on what is coming ends at a tongue admitting that the coming has come.
The reversal of two namings
The word is built on a reversal in naming: what was reckoned a life has become, in the speaker's mouth, a passage, and what was put off and deferred has become "my life." The verse does not say this outright, but the li of purpose in li-ḥayātī carries it: one does not send forward for the span one lives within; one sends forward for an end one will meet. The regret, at its depth, is regret over an error in naming: the passage was reckoned a settling-place, and the end was reckoned far off, not to be brought near.
The structure of time in the verb
Two tenses gather in the word: a present in "he says," renewing without break, and a past in "I sent forward," whose door is shut. The grief is present and lasting; the wished-for act is past and not to be resumed. This opposition is the whole weight of the regret: a feeling that does not leave, fastened to a deed whose door no longer opens. Sending-forward by its nature is only ever before the appointment; once the appointment falls due, nothing remains but to say it.
This word may touch a trait common to human beings: that the one creature who knows it is walking toward an appointment, and is able to send something ahead before it, so often defers. The capacity to "send forward", to work for a term not yet present, may be among the most particular things that mark this creature; and the disabling of that capacity by an endless putting-off may be the very thing the verse names a grief. The regret here may not be a penalty foreign to the self, but the fruit of a faculty in it left idle: it knew the ahead and sent nothing to it.
