Commentary
The verse opens with laqad, that is, the lām of emphasis joined to qad, the particle of verification, so that two affirmations gather at the head of the sentence and fall on what follows before it is even said. The opening prepares the listener for a settled report that leaves no room for surmise: what will be said is fixed in the root of the making, not a passing state that goes away.
The oath at the head of the Surah was preparing for this verification. After an oath resting on the witness of a fixed ground, where the one addressed dwells, the answer to the oath comes affirmed: "We have indeed created." The emphasis here sets the report down as a limit that is not argued with, not as an ornament to it.
The verb khalaqnā, "We created," is from the root kh-l-q, which turns on a measuring that splits the material and brings it out in a firm, well-set shape. One says khalaqa al-adīm, "he shaped the hide," when he measured it before cutting, and al-khalīq is the one for whom a thing is measured out in keeping with what suits him. Creating, then, is a measuring that passes into the thing and makes its form firm to a known measure, not a random bringing-into-being.
Al-insān, "the human being," is from a root that turns on coming into view after hiddenness, and on the ease of company (uns) after estrangement. The creature named here is therefore this being that finds ease in company and in whom others find ease, rising into view after lying folded away, not an abstract kind. The one addressed, dwelling in the ground by which the oath was sworn, belongs to this very being.
Then comes "in toil, in straitened hardship." The root k-b-d turns on a hidden inner weight that presses and stays fixed. From it come al-kabid, the liver, the heavy organ sunk in the middle of the body's hollow; kabid al-samāʾ, the middle of the sky, where the sun grows fierce and heavy; and takabbada al-amr, said of one who bore the hard and weighty part of a matter. Kabad, accordingly, is a hardship that presses in from within, not from the surface.
The particle fī ("in") makes kabad a container surrounding the making, not an accident that comes upon it: the human being was created set in it, as a thing held within its container, rather than created and afterward struck by kabad. Hardship is thus the orbit of his state from the first of his coming-to-be, and he turns about in it as a thing turns about in its vessel.
With a doubled emphasis, laqad, the verse makes certain a report about the root of the making, not about a passing state. The root kh-l-q is a measuring that passes into the material and brings out a firm form, so the human being is created to a known measure. Al-insān is the being that comes into view out of hiddenness and finds ease in company. Kabad, from k-b-d, is a hidden weight pressing from within, and the particle fī makes it a container that surrounds, not something that befalls. So the verse settles that hardship is set in the very core of the measure to which this being was created; he turns about in it from his first coming-to-be, and it is the key to what follows about the steep ascent he has not flung himself at.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"We have indeed created the human being in toil" is read as a statement about the whole human kind, and kabad is glossed as the hardship and fatigue a person endures through the stages of life: in being carried, born, nursed, weaned, then in seeking livelihood and struggling against desires, on to the hardship of death and what follows it. It has also been read as "in kabad" meaning standing upright, of even stature, unlike what walks bent over.
A reading that lays out the stages of hardship across a lifetime, or reads the upright stature.
A root-reading
Khalaqnā (root kh-l-q): a measuring that penetrates the material and brings it out as a sound form to a known measure. Al-insān (root a-n-s): the being that appears out of concealment and grows familiar. Kabad (root k-b-d): a hidden weight pressing from within, like the organ sunk deep, like the sky's midpoint where the sun grows heavy. The particle fī ("in") makes this weight a container around the creating, not an accident upon it. The verse becomes: "Truly We measured this emerging being set within a weight that presses it from inside, from its very first form."
A reading that hears kabad as a vessel enclosing the creation, not a stage that passes through it.
The two readings do not conflict. The first enumerates the sites of hardship across a lifetime; the second hears, in "in kabad," a weight set into the root of the measuring itself. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
The verse settles that kabad is the vessel of the creating, not an accident upon it: "in kabad." Hardship is set into the very measuring this being was made to, attending it as a vessel attends what it holds.
And the place of kabad in the verse is the place of a hidden weight pressing from within, as the root k-b-d showed in the sunken organ and the sky's midpoint. The verse does not describe a severity arriving from outside; it describes a pressure welling from inside the making itself.
This weight set at the root is what makes the steep ascent named later (al-ʿaqaba) a connected meaning: a being created in an abiding straitness, then called to climb a rising path. The kabad at the head of the passage prepares the climb at its end.
It may be that "in kabad" points to how this being, alone among the living so far as we know, carries a weight that does not leave it: perhaps the weight of an awareness that grasps its own straitness and end and so labors under it; perhaps the weight of the upright stature that resists what pulls it down; perhaps both. And it may be that this very abiding pressure is what drives this being toward the storming and the climb, so that it finds no rest except in passing beyond what it was created in.
Tadabbur
