﴾ These same readers extend that same trust to what is being sent down to Muhammad now and to what was sent down to communities before him; and they hold a settled, quiet certainty about the life that comes after. ﴿
Sending down, in the root n-z-l, is a dense penetration that fastens on a place and extends into it: not a random falling but a concentrated arrival at a target. The revelation did not drop into open air with no direction. It came through from the unseen with a sharp concentration, fastened on one particular place, the heart of the one addressed, and extended inside it.
That is why trust here comes joined to the addressed "to you", and not to an impersonal form. Trust in what has been sent down is not trust in a bare text standing on its own; it is a bond with the one on whom the revelation came down and who received it. The addressed "you" carries a living presence into the moment of reading: whoever trusts the sending down renews safety for the one who carried it and for what he carried, and does not sign off on a ready-made piece of information.
Trusting what was sent down before the one addressed is an acknowledgement that revelation is a single source whose descents varied as the times and the peoples varied. Whoever trusted all of it established that his trust is for the truth itself, and not for one particular affiliation to a generation or to a single book.
And "before you", in the root q-b-l, is a cutting that clings, that fastens and extends: what came earlier of sending down is firm and joined, not severed. Trust in what was sent down before ties all the descents back to one source. Whoever returns to the source engages with every earlier descent of it; whoever shuts himself inside his affiliation alone is cut off from the very origin he claims to belong to.
Yaqīn, in the root y-q-n, is a connection that reaches the depth and then goes through into the inward. The first letter is an extended connection, the second a settled depth, the third a passing through to the inside. Yaqīn is not a mental assent added onto a stock of information; it is a settling that reaches the deepest point in the being and then runs through it.
So the verse says "they hold certainty" and does not say "they trust". Whoever has reached this degree finds the life that comes after standing before him as a present thing, as though the Throne were in view, as though the people of the Garden were visiting one another, as though the people of the Fire were howling. Whoever carries this certainty in his heart finds all his deeds counted upon him and set in front of him, and not a deferred unseen that the hour of heedlessness slips out of.
The six descriptions together draw two degrees of trust: a first degree carried by everyone who opened his heart to the unseen, kept the connection standing and passed the provision on, and it has room in it for those the call has not reached in a clear way; and a higher degree that adds to that trust in the whole of the revelation and certainty about the life that comes after. Both are a role and not a name, a state and not a title. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity.
Three descriptions come down to complete the six, carrying the first degree up into a higher one. They trust what is sent down to the one addressed and what was sent down before him. Sending down, in the root n-z-l, is no random falling but a dense penetration that fastens on a place and extends into it: the revelation did not drop into open air with no direction; it came through from the unseen with concentration, fastened on the heart of the one addressed, and extended inside it. That is why trust comes joined to the addressed "to you": whoever trusts the sending down renews safety for the one who carried it and for what he carried, and does not sign off on a ready-made piece of information. Then trust reaches out to what was sent down before him: revelation is a single source whose descents varied as the times and the peoples varied, and whoever trusted all of it established that his trust is for the truth itself and not for one affiliation. And "before you", in the root q-b-l, is a cutting that clings, that fastens and extends: what came earlier is firm and joined, not severed, and it ties every descent back to one source. The role returns to the origin; affiliation on its own closes upon itself. Then the third: they hold a settled certainty about the life that comes after. Yaqīn, in the root y-q-n, is a connection that reaches the depth and then goes through into the inward, and its image is water coming to rest at the bottom of a well once the noise above it has quieted. So the verse says "they hold certainty" and not "they trust": whoever reaches that degree finds the life that comes after standing before him as a present thing. And the word for that life, in the root ʾ-kh-r, names no ending but the confirming of a space that extends without a break, which is why it is paired with certainty and not with trust alone. So the six descriptions complete themselves on two degrees: a first degree carried by everyone who opened his heart to the unseen, kept the connection standing and passed the provision on, with room in it for those the call has not reached in a clear way; and a higher degree that adds trust in the whole of the revelation and certainty about the life that comes after. Both are a role and not a name, a state and not a title. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity.
