﴾ So Allah gave them the reward of the world and the goodness of the reward of the Hereafter. Allah loves the doers of good. ﴿
The consequence particle comes after their speech and their asking and ties the preceding movement to a result: Allah gave them. Giving, from ʾ-t-y, is a setting-out that flows on and then meets its place, so that it carries a gift conveyed until it arrives. The past verb establishes that the giving occurred, and the plural pronoun returns it to the company already described, while the delayed name of Allah is the agent; so the connective ascribes the recompense to the explicit giving of Allah.
"The reward of the world" arrives as the object of what He gave them. Reward, from th-w-b, is what leaves its place and goes on, then joins it again and holds to it, so that it carries a counterpart returning to the doer. The world, from d-n-w, is a penetrating push that enters inward containment and then opens onto nearness, so that the word names the lower or the nearer side. The possessive construction binds the reward to this side and so establishes for them a counterpart present in the nearer, not promised in another, and this is an answer to what they asked in their prayer. Unlike the condition that came before, no partitive "from" arrives here; the verb establishes the giving of the reward that has been named.
The conjunction adds a second object: the goodness of the reward of the Hereafter. Goodness, from ḥ-s-n, is a containment that runs within a precise course and then issues outward, so that it carries a quality appearing from within a thing. It is joined to "reward," and the reward is joined to "the Hereafter," from ʾ-kh-r, the side that comes last. So the second giving is set apart by the goodness of the reward on that side.
The conjunction closes with a sentence whose head is the name of Allah, and the present tense "loves" arrives and renews the relation. Love, from ḥ-b-b, is a narrowing that connects and adheres, the repeated bāʾ thickening the pressure of the bond and its firmness. The object is "the doers of good," from ḥ-s-n in the form that brings the goodness out into act and toward another. They were described by good-doing as a noun, not by a past verb as the giving was: the giving fell once and its wording is over, while the good-doing stands in them; and that is why the love came in the present, keeping pace with the lasting of the description rather than matching the gift. The sentence does not reduce good-doing to the seeking of recompense; it joins those who bear it to the love of Allah after the mention of what He gave them.
The consequence particle answers the course of the prayer and the steadfastness with a giving whose agent is Allah and whose object is the company. He gave them the reward of the world as the wording named it, and He gave them the goodness of the reward of the Hereafter, setting the last counterpart apart by the description of quality. The two possessive constructions keep the two sides unmixed, and the giving stays ascribed to Allah, not to an independent desert. The closing clause of the verse then passes from the giving to the love and binds it to the doers of good, who were described as standing upon the bringing out of goodness into act.
