﴾ Their speech was only that they said: Our Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), forgive us our dhunūb (the faults that trail) and our excess in our affair, make our feet firm, and help us against the disbelieving people. ﴿
The conjunction adds a description of the ribbiyyun whose negations came before. The negative enters upon "was," and "only" arrives to confine their speech within "that they said." Speech, from q-w-l, is a cutting release that sends a sound out of the mouth and extends while it stays attached to its speaker, so that it carries a meaning going out in connected wording. The pronoun returns to the company, and the past establishes that the words issued from them. The verse adds no orations and no other slogans; what is confined is their speech.
The speech begins with "our Rabb," a noun joined to the pronoun of the company and carrying the relation of lordship and of nearness. The imperative then arrives in the shape of a prayer: forgive us. In gh-f-r the coverer descends into the hollow of the flaw and runs over it, and the preposition makes the company the receivers of that covering. The object of the request is "our dhunūb," from dh-n-b: a following trace that attaches to the one it belongs to. By joining the dhunūb to themselves, the prayer begins with an acknowledgement that carries responsibility for the past.
The conjunction adds "our excess" to the sins as another object of forgiveness. Excess, from s-r-f, is a precise confining that runs on unbroken and then opens a cleft, so that it carries a movement crossing the boundary and going out of the governing of the course. The possessive keeps the crossing ascribed to them, while "in our affair" confines it within their gathered matter in motion. So the acknowledgement widens from the sin to the crossing of the boundary inside the affair.
The conjunction adds a new request: make our feet firm. Firmness, from th-b-t, is a dense, fine gathering that joins its place and clings to it and is then pressed shut upon it, so that it carries a foot that keeps its stand. The doubled form carries a repeated charge of establishing. Feet, from q-d-m, are a knotting that pushes through and then gathers in contact, so that the word carries what goes forward and what the body settles upon. The possessive binds them to the praying company. The word is not turned into a plan of the field; what is asked for is the firming of the feet itself.
The conjunction adds the last request: help us. In n-ṣ-r the help gathers in a firm interior and then runs to the one it belongs to, carrying strength to him. "Against" makes the people the facing side, while "disbelieving" describes them by the act of covering standing in them. The request for help from the Rabb comes after the forgiveness and the firming, so the movement passes from the covering of the past and the establishing of the present to a supply for the encounter.
The construction confines the speech of the company to a prayer that begins with acknowledgement and ends with a request for help. They ask their Rabb to forgive their sins and their excess in their affair, and so they ascribe the flaw to themselves. They then ask for the firming of their feet in a form that carries a repeated establishing, and they ask for help against the people described by covering. So the movement runs from the covering of the past, to the firming of the present, to a help asked for the encounter.
