﴾ That is because of what your hands sent ahead, and because Allah is not one who greatly wrongs the servants. ﴿
"That" gathers what came before into a single outcome: their saying was written, their killing was written, and then came the command to taste the punishment of burning. The demonstrative opens no other time and no recompense beyond the one already stated; it returns the result to the road that led to it. The address remains with the group that heard "taste," so that it binds the two verses together without the doers of the act being lost between them. It opens no new record; it discloses the closing of the record that was left open.
"Because of" discloses the cause: the outcome did not fall on those it reaches without a road leading to it, and it found before it what their hands had pushed forward. Sending ahead, from q-d-m, is a knot that holds firm and then gathers what is sent forward, and the doubled form "sent ahead" takes up the pushing time after time, so that the act does not pass through one moment and then fade. Referring it to the hands fastens it to those who carry them: what they made went ahead of them and then met them. Between the sending and the meeting, the attachment of the work to them is preserved without a break.
The verse then does not leave the work alone in the scene; it joins to it the reality of justice, "and because Allah." What the hands sent ahead keeps the act attached to those who did it, and what follows the name of Allah denies that the outcome is a wrong laid upon them. The two sides thus meet without one absorbing the other: the act is their own, and the recompense does not step outside justice. The divine will is not used as a veil that would wipe away what their hands acquired.
"Not one who greatly wrongs" is a sealed denial that leaves wrong no lighter door to enter by. Wrong, from ẓ-l-m, is a covering that closes over a thing and takes hold of it, keeping it held within and holding it back from its right, and the form "one who greatly wrongs" carries the density of the act and its repetition; when that form is denied, a lesser degree of wrong has no better footing. The denial extends to all "the servants": whoever stands in servanthood receives from Allah neither a holding back from his right nor a veiling of that right. The servants enter this denial in their full number, under one and the same seal.
The outcome does not arrive as a stranger to the road: what the hands pushed out before them returns upon them, and each act keeps its doer. At the same time the recompense stands within a complete denial of wrong on Allah's part, so that the density of "one who greatly wrongs" leaves no room to suppose that a lesser degree might be possible. The act remains referred to the hands of those who did it, and its return upon them remains within justice; cause and justice meet in the verse.
