﴾ Allah certainly heard the statement of those who said, 'Allah is poor and we are rich.' We will write what they said and their killing of the prophets without right, and We will say, 'Taste the punishment of the burning.' ﴿
The lām and "certainly" together give emphasis to the completed act; Allah's name stands as its agent and "the statement" as its object. Hearing, from s-m-ʿ, is a confinement that gathers and then passes from within to without, and it carries a reception that envelops what is heard. The statement is joined to a relative pronoun whose clause, with the verb "said", defines it, so what is heard is a statement, and its owners are those who uttered it. The emphasis does not carry the content of that statement over into the voice of the text; the sentence that follows is a quotation attributed to them.
Their speech opens with a particle of insistence and assigns to Allah the description of poverty, then coordinates a counterpart to it: and we are rich. The first-person plural makes wealth a claim the speakers advance on their own behalf, and the plural "rich" agrees with them. The text does not endorse this pairing; it calls it a statement that was heard, then promises to write it down. In this way the phrase remains within the bounds of the quotation the text attributes to them, and its charge remains suspended on the pronoun that uttered it.
The sīn opens a future tense attributed to the majestic plural: We will write. Writing, from k-t-b, is a retaining that holds a thing by a fine pressure and then joins it to its place, so that it clings to it; it carries speech held in a line of script joined to its page. The first object, "what they said", preserves their utterance, and the conjunction adds a second object, "their killing of the prophets". The prophets are the object of the killing, and "without right" denies their act any right. Attaching the killing to their plural pronoun assigns the act to them all together, and the heard statement is thereby coupled with an act that occurred, within one single record that is written.
The conjunction adds an imperfect verb attributed to the majestic plural: and We will say. What is said is a command addressed to the group, "taste". Tasting, from dh-w-q, is a soft contact that extends until it settles within and perception takes place by it; it carries a direct experience. The object is "the punishment of the burning"; burning, from ḥ-r-q, is a narrowing that runs by friction and then knots in depth, and it carries a continuous combustion. The command, the punishment and the construct that joins them are the stated limits of the scene, which amounts to a direct tasting of a punishment joined to burning.
The verse affirms emphatically that Allah heard the statement of a group defined by its own words, and it keeps the reported claim within the quotation of those who made it. The future tense then opens the writing of two things, what they said and their killing of the prophets without right: what they uttered and what their hands did are gathered in one writing. The answering statement comes as a command to them to taste the punishment of the burning. The course of the verse passes from a heard statement to a written fixing, and from an act denied any right to a direct tasting of the punishment; it thus runs through four connected stages: hearing, then writing, then saying, then tasting.
