﴾ They sink their voices to nothing among themselves: you tarried no more than ten. ﴿
The verb is in the form of reciprocity, so the whole company lowers, each to the rest, not one man letting his voice down to another; the sound is going down in every direction at one time.
The root kh-f-t denotes a diminishing that escapes through a narrow slit and is then cut off; it is said of a voice that it khafata when it weakened until it went still. So this sinking is a sound thinning until it is at the edge of going, not silence from the start.
It is also the root that was forbidden in prayer by its own word: ﴿وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا﴾, "and do not sink it to nothing." The one root stands in two positions: forbidden where speech is raised to other than people, and occurring here where speech is passed among people alone.
"Among themselves" fences in where the speech circulates. What they say is an estimate they hand about between themselves, neither a question put to anyone nor an answer sought of anyone.
For that reason what follows comes in the form of address: "you tarried." Each of them says "you" to the rest, so the sinking of the voices is an exchange and not a man muttering to himself.
The first particle negates and the second excepts. So the sentence is a negation and a restriction, with no approximation and no supposing in its shape; its wording is the wording of certainty.
Labitha, from l-b-th, denotes an attaching to a place in which the staying holds fast and thickens. So tarrying is a stay with weight in its place, not a passing through.
"Ten" is a number with nothing counted, and it is not said ten of what. The verse states the quantity and leaves the unit out, so the estimate stays hung on something never named.
The root ʿ-sh-r turns on a gathering that spreads and is then caught up into a single knot. From it come ʿashīra, a company whose members hold to one another, and muʿāshara, a mixing that draws together. So ten is the first knot that binds the single units and holds them.
The whole verse holds an oddity to be read: the lowest thing said in voice is the most decisive thing said in form, and a whisper pronounces a restriction.
The form of reciprocity makes the lowering mutual, so the voices of a company go down each to the rest, with no one who whispers and no one whispered to. The root of the sinking is a diminishing that escapes through a narrow place and is then cut off, so the voice in the verse is going, not silent. It is also the root that came as a prohibition in the setting of prayer: what was forbidden where speech is raised falls here where speech is passed among people alone. "Among themselves" fences in where the speech circulates, so it is raised to no one, and the speech then comes as an address and not as a muttering: "you tarried." Its form is a negation and a restriction with no approximation and no hesitating in it; tarrying, in its root, is a stay with weight and not a passing through; and "ten" is a number whose counted unit was dropped, so the knot is left with no unit to count by. The root of ten, for its part, is the first knot that binds the single units. So the lowest of voices pronounces the most decisive of forms, and what is pronounced so decisively stays hung on a counted thing that was never mentioned.
