﴾ The day it is blown into the horn; and We drive the offenders together on that day, blue. ﴿
The verse contains a verb with no named doer. "The day" stands in apposition to the day that was named twice before it: it was first called by its name, and is now described by what happens in it.
"It is blown," yunfakhu, is in the passive, and there is no blower in the sentence. In a verse that did not name the doer, no doer is to be named; that is the choice of the form, not a gap to be filled.
Blowing is from n-f-kh, which denotes air driven from a hollow through a narrow passage, so that it pierces what lies before it. The act requires three things: a hollow that sends out, a narrows it passes through, and a place that is filled with it.
"The horn," al-ṣūr, is definite and undescribed; nothing is said of how it is, what it is made of, or how many times. Its root, ṣ-w-r, may be read as a hollow with a firm boundary, through which what passes runs on, and from this same origin comes ṣūra, a shape that bounds a thing and sets it apart from others. That is the measure of what may be said.
A passive is followed by the nūn of majesty. Two verbs stand in one verse: the first has no doer in its wording, while the second is attributed in the plainest way there is, "We drive together." This shift deserves attention rather than being passed over.
The driving-together, ḥashr, is a herding that presses the scattered into a narrow place until they crowd and pass on in one direction: a gathering in a strait, not a gathering in open space.
"The offenders," al-mujrimīn, is an active participle. The root j-r-m denotes a mass gathered and held and so taken into possession. From it come jirm, a body that has bulk; jarama al-nakhl, to cut down a palm's fruit and gather it; and jurāma, what is picked up from that cut fruit.
So an offender, at his root, is the owner of a gathered gain, and he is to be read with the two verses before: there a load is carried, here a mass has been harvested. What was gathered is carried, and whoever gathered is driven along with what he gathered.
Zurqan, "blue," follows, a word whose difficulty is declared. It is a state-word on those driven together, the plural of azraq: one word at the end of the verse, with no explanation after it or before it.
The root z-r-q denotes a compacting in a narrows that runs and is then let loose in one cutting thrust. From it come mizrāq, a short spear thrown so that it pierces; zaraqa al-ṭāʾir, said of a bird when it lets fly in a single discharge; and zurqa, a colour referred to this same origin.
The word has been read in more than one direction, one reading taking it as a description of the eye and another as a description of the state. The difference is declared and not settled.
Three things can be said of it with certainty: that it is a state-word, that it came at the end of the verse without explanation, and that nothing after it returns to it. So no visible scene is built on it, and no colour or shape is measured by it.
"On that day," yawmaʾidhin, repeats the time-word between the verb and the state-word that closes the verse, so the day is mentioned and then mentioned again within the same verse. What is said twice is the time; what is left unexplained is the description.
The day that was named twice is now described by what happens in it, and the description opens on a verb in the passive: a blowing with no blower mentioned, into something definite and undescribed. The root of blowing calls for a hollow, a narrows, and a place to fill; the root of the horn is a hollow with a firm boundary, through which what passes runs on; and that is the measure of what the verse gives. In the second half the attribution turns to the nūn of majesty, so one of the two verbs has no visible doer and the other has the plainest doer of all. The driving-together is a pressing into a strait, not a gathering in open space, and an offender, at his root, is the owner of a mass harvested and held, so what was carried in the verse before is what was gathered in this one. The verse then closes on a single state-word left unexplained: "blue," a word whose direction has been disputed, whose root is read as a compacting in a narrows let loose in one thrust, and over which the difference is declared and not decided either way. The last thing in the verse is a word that stands alone, and stopping at it is reading it.
