﴾ and He leaves it a bared floor, ranked level. ﴿
The particle sets one act immediately behind another, a lifting-out followed by a leaving in its wake: two consecutive verbs, not one verb explained.
The verb of leaving has no past tense in use. Its whole wording is a present and a command, so it always stands at the moment of its own happening.
The root w-dh-r denotes a parting that opens out, so that what it parts from is let run on and not held; to say dharhu is to say: leave it as it is, do not lay a hand on it. Leaving, at this root, is the raising of the hand, not the setting of it down.
So the two verbs are to be read together: the first strips away what had been clinging, the second lifts the hand from what is left. The verse does not say that He makes it a bared floor; it says that He leaves it a bared floor. The last shape is what remained after the stripping, not a work begun.
The pronoun "it" reaches most nearly to what was named just before it, and the places those occupied may also be meant by it. Both faces stand in the wording, and the verse fixes on neither.
Two state-words then follow one another with no connector between them: the first says what it became, the second how it is.
Al-qāʿ is from q-w-ʿ, which denotes the bottom of a place, closed with no crack in it, showing when nothing lies over it. From it come qāʿ al-shayʾ, the underside of a thing, and the qāʿ of land, what spread out and settled low until its lowest part showed. So the word is a name for an underside uncovered after having been hidden by what stood over it.
Ṣafṣafan is a doubled word: ṣaf, and then ṣaf again. The root ṣ-f-f denotes an extension held and then spaced out along a single line with no protrusion in it, whence ṣaff, a company set on one line.
The doubling itself is to be read: the word repeats its own syllable as a level surface repeats its own line, and evenness is spoken twice inside a single word.
That same root came in this sūra as a command in the moment of confrontation: ﴿ثُمَّ ائْتُوا صَفًّا﴾, "then come in one rank." What was there a shape a people are ordered into is said here of a shape that ground is left in.
A particle sets one act behind another: a stripping, then a leaving. The second verb has no past tense in use, and its root is a parting that lets a thing run on unheld, so that leaving is the raising of a hand and not the setting of one down. That is why the verse says "He leaves it," not "He makes it": the shape that remains is the trace of the stripping, not a work begun. The pronoun admits what was named before it and also admits the places those occupied, and the verse fixes on neither. Two state-words then follow with no connector, the first naming and the second describing. Qāʿan, at its root, is an underside uncovered after having been hidden by what stood over it; ṣafṣafan is a word that repeats its own syllable and so pronounces evenness twice, its root an extension whose parts are laid along a line with no protrusion in it, and it is the root by which a people in this sūra were commanded to come forward in one rank. So when what stood over it was stripped away its underside showed, and what has its underside showing has nothing left in it that stands over.
