﴾ And they ask you about the mountains. Say: my Lord will lift them out and scatter them, a scattering. ﴿
The subject of the asking is a pronoun that is never named. Whoever asked is not identified, and whatever is built on identifying him comes from outside the line. More important still, the wording of the question is not reported. It says "about the mountains" and does not say what they asked about them. What is preserved is the subject of the question, not its form, and whoever composes a question for them has written what was never written.
"The mountains" is definite and plural. The root j-b-l is a mass that gathers, holds together, then attaches to its place and extends there. From it comes the expression for a nature stamped into a thing so that it never leaves it, and jibilla, the fixed constitution that is not exchanged. At its root, then, a mountain is the name of what has compacted and stayed put. That is what was asked about: what nobody imagines being moved.
The particle ties the answer to the question, and the command is "say," not "know." What is required is an utterance to be delivered, not a knowledge to be stored. Then read the answer itself: it contains no description of mountains at all. No size, no number, no place, no hour. It contains an act done to them and a doer who does it. A question about things is answered with a verb and an agent. And "my Lord" carries the speaker's own possessive. It does not say "your Lord" or "the Lord of the worlds." The one commanded to speak attributes the act to his own Lord, so the answer leaves the mouth of one who knows to whom he is referring it.
The root n-s-f is the taking of a thing out from among what holds it, and then its dispersal and driving away. From it comes the winnowing tray by which grain is tossed until it parts from its husk, and the phrase for a wind that lifted the dust and scattered it. So what is said is not that they are demolished or that they fall. What is said is that they are pulled out of their places and then winnowed away. And the sharpest thing in the word is that it strips a thing of its clinging, while a mountain, at its root, is precisely what clings to its place.
Then the verbal noun follows the verb, "a scattering." The act is confirmed by its own name, so it is not turned to a figure and not softened. And this very wording, verb and verbal noun together, was spoken in this sūra only a few pages earlier: ﴿لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُ ثُمَّ لَنَنسِفَنَّهُ فِي الْيَمِّ نَسْفًا﴾, "we shall burn it and then scatter it into the sea, a scattering." There it was said of the calf; here it is said of the mountains. One word for a made thing that was worshipped and for the steadiest thing on the earth. And nothing is added to this: no time is reckoned, no shape described, no manner stated. The verse gave a verb, an agent, and a verbal noun; it did not give a scene.
The question was about what stays; the answer is a verb that strips staying away. It is the same verb, with the same verbal noun, that the sūra had already spoken over a thing men made.
