﴾ To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth and what is between the two and what is under the moist soil. ﴿
The verse begins with the preposition and its pronoun before anything they attach to. It does not say "what is in the heavens and what is in the earth belongs to Him"; the possessive is put first. Fronting in an Arabic sentence confines: whatever comes after it falls inside what was fronted and does not slip out, and however long the chain of conjunctions runs, it stays under that first particle. One particle at the head is enough for four clauses behind it. And this is the first verse after the one before it. There a name, a particle and a verb; here a belonging. The Surah begins its own unpacking with the very next thing it says.
Four relative pronouns are joined in sequence, and not one of them names what it holds. The container is named and the contained is not: the heavens, the earth, the between, and what is under the moist soil, while what is inside them is only "what." And that relative covers what is aware and what is not, what is known and what is not. Counting is cut off at its root, since what has not been named cannot be counted.
Read the particles and not only the nouns. The first clause takes "in," the second takes "in," the third takes "between," the fourth takes "under." Three prepositions distributed across four clauses. "In" puts a thing inside a vessel, "between" fills the gap between two ends, and "under" steps down from a thing to what lies beneath it. The first holds, the second fills the gap, the third goes below the floor itself. And the earth was named in the second clause, then the speech returns to it in the fourth from underneath. One place, entered once and gone beneath once.
It does not say "and what is under the earth," though the earth had been named two words earlier. It says "under the moist soil," and that word, from th-r-y, is a fine loose stuff through which wet runs; from the same root comes the verb for ground turning damp. The word names the moist crumb of the ground, not the whole earth. There is precision in that. The earth is the name of a floor that is walked on; the moist soil is the name of a layer in it. So the descent in the fourth clause is not a descent beneath the earth as a whole but beneath the first thing dug out of it. Now read the four together. The heavens are seen, the earth is seen, what is between them is a span that is seen, and only what is under the moist soil is beyond the reach of sight. Three containers whose extent can be taken in, and a fourth that begins exactly where looking ends. There the verse halted and set its rhyme. Belonging is traced to the point where sight breaks off, and then it continues and does not break off.
One particle at the head confines four clauses; four relatives name no contents; three prepositions carry them from the height to the floor and then beneath it. The list stops where seeing stops, not where the belonging stops.
