Commentary
The build changes. Until now the verbs came first: raised, set to measure, dimmed, brought out. Here the noun comes first in the accusative, and its verb follows after it carrying its pronoun: "and the earth … He pushed it out flat." What is named first is the thing acted upon, not the actor.
And this fronting sets the earth in the face of the listener after the speech had all been about the sky. And the one who was asked ﴿أَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا﴾, "are you firmer in the making," is standing on it. The weighing that began with what is over the head comes down now to what is under the foot.
And arḍ, in ʾ-r-ḍ, is a base that breaks out and runs and is then drawn together heavily into a fixed place: a carrier, not a thing carried. Setting it here as an object makes the carrier itself a thing set down by another's hand.
Baʿda, in b-ʿ-d, is a position that has passed beyond nearness and settled behind it. It is annexed to dhālika, "that," and to point with dhālika is to point at what is far. What is pointed at is everything that came before, a raising and a setting to measure and a dimming and a bringing-out, gathered into one word and then indicated from a distance.
And the adverb says that this comes behind that, and there it stops. No magnitude is put on the distance in the verse and no name is given to it, and what follows the adverb is a single verb and nothing else: "He pushed it out flat." The reading halts where the wording halted.
Daḥw, in d-ḥ-w, is a push that extends and so flattens what it pushed and levels it. The Arabs say daḥā al-sayl al-ḥaṣā of a torrent that scours the pebbles aside and lays them out, and the midḥāt is the board with which earth is pushed until it lies level.
So the verb holds three things in one: a pushing, a flattening, and a levelling for what is to come over it. And it is not the raising that fell on the sky. That one gave a standing magnitude; this one levels a face to be walked on.
And that is why the verses after it follow it: what has been levelled is then drawn from and then pinned down. A levelling is never wanted for itself; it is wanted for whoever passes over it.
The speech moves from the sky to the earth by fronting a noun in the accusative: "and the earth … He pushed it out flat," so the thing acted upon runs ahead of its verb and stands in the face. ʾ-r-ḍ is a base that breaks out and runs and is drawn together heavily into a fixed place, a carrier that has here become carried by another's act. "After that," from b-ʿ-d, is a position that has passed beyond nearness and settled behind it, and "that" points from a distance at all that preceded, taken together. Then "He pushed it out flat": d-ḥ-w is a push that extends and flattens and levels. The sky was given a standing magnitude; the earth was given a levelled face. Two makings different in direction, one in the hand that made them.
Overhead a body was raised. Underfoot a face was pushed flat. The same hand, working in two directions.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
Daḥāhā is read as "He spread it out and stretched it," and later tradition adds that the verb points to the round shape of the earth. "After that" is read as a chronological ordering between the making of the sky and the making of the earth, and a harmonization is built on it between the places where the two makings are mentioned.
A reading whose axis is the shape of the earth and the ordering of the epochs.
A root-reading
Al-arḍ (root ʾ-r-ḍ): a base that breaks out and runs and is drawn together heavily into a fixed place, fronted here in the accusative and standing as an object. Baʿda (root b-ʿ-d): a position that has passed beyond nearness and settled behind it, so the adverb fixes an edge behind an edge and names no magnitude for it. Daḥāhā (root d-ḥ-w): a push that extends and flattens and levels. The verse becomes: "And the earth, behind all of that, He pushed and flattened and levelled it."
A reading that hears in the verb a levelling for what will come after it, and stops at what the adverb actually bounds.
The two readings do not conflict. The first describes a shape and orders the epochs; the second hears, in the root, a push that flattens and levels. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

The verse sets two makings against each other with two different verbs. What is overhead had its thickness raised and was set to measure; what is underfoot was pushed, flattened and levelled. The difference between the two acts is a difference in the direction of the use: one raises a roof, the other prepares a passage.
And "after that" fixes an edge behind an edge. What is named after it is not a description of the earth but an act performed upon it, and in the two verses that follow it two more acts come, a bringing-out and an anchoring, and then the use is named. What is said of the earth is what was done to it, and the whole counting runs toward a purpose stated at its end.
And the position of the one addressed is between the two: above him a roof he did not raise, beneath him a face he did not level. He is the one who was asked, a few verses earlier, about the firmness of his own making, and the answer that came is a counting of acts in which he had no hand.
Hardly a human community is known that has not read the ground under its feet as prepared for it before it arrived: they call it a mother, a cradle, a bed, and they build their counting and their livelihood on it without any agreement among them. And the word the verse chose for this is a verb, not an adjective: a push that flattens and levels. It may be that a reader today would like to make "after that" into a calendar for the coming-to-be of celestial bodies, and to make "He spread it" into a description of the earth's shape. That is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for what stands in the wording is an adverb fixing a behindness and a verb that gathers a pushing, a flattening and a levelling. The instruments by which people measure what lies below them and above them change from one generation to the next, and the wording stays as it spoke: a making ascribed to a maker, and a use named after it.
