﴾ And when the covered garden (al-janna) has been brought close. ﴿
The root j-n-n is a dense enclosure that holds and so screens. It is what is said of night when it comes down over a person and covers him, of the unborn hidden in the belly, of the shield that is held against harm and covers the one carrying it.
So the garden is not named from its fruit, nor from what is in it, but from a thickness that screens its inside. An orchard whose trees have closed over until what lies between them is out of sight. The name says more about its condition before this place than it says about anything it holds.
And this sits next to what came before it with great precision. "And when the sky has been drawn off" is the stripping away of a cover; then two covered things are named. And one of the two carries the covering in its very name.
The root z-l-f is an unbroken gliding that folds distance until one end is drawn up to the other. A zulfa is a standing that is close; izdalafa is said of the one who drew near; azlafahu, of a thing another brought near.
And uzlifat stands on the causative pattern built without its doer: nearness happens to the garden from something other than itself. It is not the one that drew near, and it did not move itself. The distance was folded away from it while it stayed in its place.
Nor is it said to whom it was brought near. The other end is left unspoken exactly as the doer is left unspoken. What this verse reports is a distance folded, not names called out.
It comes after "and when the massed fire has been made to rise and spread," and the two verbs face each other. There, what had gathered in the interior goes out and up; here, what stood far off has its distance folded into nearness.
And both hold one silence. No doer is named, and no one is named who meets the one or the other. The act is stated, and what follows from it is left to the answer still to come.
So what happened to the garden is no change in the garden. Its own thickness screened it; then the distance was folded, and what lay behind the screen stood within a look.
Al-janna, from j-n-n, is a dense enclosure that holds and screens, so the name is built on covering and not on what is enjoyed inside, which is why it comes second after the screen is drawn off in "and when the sky has been drawn off." Uzlifat, from z-l-f, is an unbroken gliding that folds distance until one end is drawn up to the other, in the causative built without its doer: nearness is made in it and does not come from it, and the end it was brought near to is not named. It answers "and when the massed fire has been made to rise and spread" act for act: that one a going out and up, this one a folding of distance. A garden named by its own screening, standing within a look.
