﴾ A writing marked out, entry by entry. ﴿
The question was: what is sijjīn? The answer is: a writing. And the word itself passed two verses back, "the record of those who split the bound is in sijjīn." So what was taken for a strange vessel to be searched out turns out to be of the same kind as what is kept in it. The answer does not step outside the vocabulary of the question.
And k-t-b is a fine confining that catches what would slip away and fixes it, then opens and hands it out. So the holding named sijjīn is a holding of exactness, not a holding of walls. And "a writing" comes indefinite: an answer by kind, not by identification. A name was asked after and the reply says what it is, not where it is.
The root r-q-m is a light gripping touch that knots in its own place and is then gathered next to its fellows. From it comes the marking of a garment, a sign set into it by which it is told from another, and the arqam among snakes, the one whose skin carries distinct spots. So a marking is not a quantity to be counted; it is a sign set apart so that it does not resemble its neighbour.
Marqūm is a passive participle: the writing has had that distinguishing set upon it. It is not described as long, nor as terrible, nor as numerous. It is described as exact. Every touch in it holds its own place and no other. And what does not run together is not disputed on the day it is read.
Then the same two words return on the other side of the Surah, answering for ʿilliyyūn exactly as they answered for sijjīn. The exactness is one for both parties; the difference lies in what holds, not in the workmanship. There is no margin left unattended in the weighing.
The answer is two words, and both come from inside the question. "A writing" repeats the wording of the seventh verse, and k-t-b is a fine confining that fixes and then opens, so the holding called sijjīn is exactness and not walls. It comes indefinite: an answer by kind to what sounded like a question about a place. Then marqūm, from r-q-m: a touch that knots in its place and is gathered beside its fellows, as a garment is marked and as the spotted snake carries its distinct markings. The description is precision, not terror. Then the same two words are said on the other side of the Surah, and the workmanship proves to be one for both parties. A "where" was asked and a "how" was answered, and the how is a mark that never blurs into its neighbour.
﴾ Un écrit marqué, signe après signe. ﴿
