Commentary
The root j-y-ʾ turns on arriving at the end of a course: the coming into presence of what had been away, until it reaches its place and is present. The word denotes the reaching of the goal, a course that ends in presence, rather than mere movement along a way. So the verb says that the appointment which had been deferred has reached its term, and what was awaited is present.
Ascribing this presence to "your Rabb" ties the address to the very one addressed: your own Rabb, not a lord at large, the Owner who disposes, who reared you and managed your affair. Rabb is from r-b-b, a close, unbroken keeping that makes grow and manages toward completion. So the one who reared and gave respite is the one who is present at the end of the matter to decide, and this presence is the last link in a care that began with bringing into being and ends with the reckoning.
Al-malak, "the angels," is from ʾ-l-k, whence al-alūk, the message; the singular was malʾak, and its hamza shows again in the plural malāʾika. The angel is the bearer of a message, under command, carrying out what it was given to carry and not going beyond it. So the presence of al-malak with the presence of al-rabb is the presence of the one sent beside the One who sends: a complete ordering that arrives whole, the One who commands and those who carry His command.
Al-malak comes in the singular, with the whole kind meant: the word is one, and the sense is a multitude that takes in the ranks. The appointment, then, does not come empty; present with it is a host whose command is owned, a presence that lays bare the awe of that standing and makes the deciding complete.
Al-ṣaff, "rank," is from ṣ-f-f, the drawing of things together along one line in an order with no crookedness in it. What is ranked is one thing laid beside another, level, each in its place, neither going ahead nor falling behind. So the presence comes packed close, in a firm arrangement, and without disorder.
The repetition of the word, "rank upon rank," conveys succession and multitude: rank behind rank without a break, until the scene seems to be lines following one another whose edge never ends. The arrangement is thus a repeated structure, not a single rank that is seen, and it points to a host beyond counting and a firm command that does not falter.
The verse pictures the coming of the awaited appointment. "Comes," from j-y-ʾ, is a course that reaches presence after deferral and respite, and its ascription to "your Rabb," from r-b-b, joins the one who decides at the end of the matter to the one who reared and managed from its beginning. Present with Him are "the angels," al-malak, from ʾ-l-k: a host that carries the command, carrying it out and not going beyond, one in word and many in what is meant. They come "rank upon rank," from ṣ-f-f, drawn together in a firm arrangement repeated rank after rank without a flaw. So the scene is a presence complete in its ordering: the Owner comes to decide, and His host stands packed close and level, with no disorder in it, making ready for the reckoning to which the verses after it lead.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"And your Lord comes" is read within the scene of the last day, when Allah comes to decide the judgement among His creation; the coming is borne upon what befits His majesty, without likening and without asking "how." Al-malak is the angels descending in ranks, it is said the dwellers of each heaven form a rank, encompassing creatures for the reckoning. The verse is tied to what precedes it, the levelling of the earth and the bringing of the Fire, depicting the terrors of the day of recompense.
A reading that fixes the scene on the last day and describes the angels descending in ranks for the reckoning.
A root-reading
Jā'a (root j-y-'): the reaching of a journey's end in presence after absence, so the deferred appointment has reached its term. Rabbuka (root r-b-b): the owner who tends, who ordered the affair from its first, so the one who decides at the last is the one who reared at the first. Al-malak (root ʾ-l-k): the bearer of al-alūk, the message, bidden, carrying out and not overstepping, singular in word and the kind intended. Ṣaffan ṣaffan (root ṣ-f-f): a joining along a level line, repeated rank after rank with no flaw. The verse becomes: "The appointment has reached its end, so the Owner is present to decide, and His bidden host is present, set in line upon a repeated order with no disorder in it."
A reading that hears in the roots the coming of an appointment fully ordered: an Owner who decides, and a host set firm in rank.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes the scene and describes the descent of the ranks; the second hears, in the roots, the shape of a firm coming and a repeated order. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
1. The coming is the arrival of a deferred appointment
The verb jā'a says that what had been absent and deferred has reached its end and is now present. The root j-y-' carries this: a journeying that ends in arrival. The verse does not describe a standing stillness but a moment of reaching: the appointment long awaited has reached its limit, and no respite remains after it.
2. The one who reared at the first is the one who decides at the last
The coming is ascribed to "your Rabb," not to a name that gives only overpowering. Rabb, from r-b-b, is a sustained attachment that grows and orders toward completion. So the coming to decide is the last link in a tending that began with bringing-into-being and passed through respite. The one who ordered the affair from its first is the one who comes to seal it; the reckoning is the completion of the rearing, not a break from it.
3. The coming is firm in order, with no disorder in it
The angel comes ṣaffan ṣaffan: a joining along a level line, repeated without flaw. The scene the Surah is driving toward is not turmoil but a complete ordering arriving set in rank: an Owner who decides, and a host owned in command, bidden, that carries out and does not overstep. The repeated order bears witness that the affair is held fast from its first to its end.
There may be, in the image of the repeated ranks "rank upon rank," a hint that what lies beyond the witnessed in creation rests, too, upon an order set firm like this order: degrees following degrees, layers above layers, with no disorder in their structure. And perhaps the uncovering of this order on the day of deciding may be an uncovering of what had been hidden from us in the arranging of all existence, so that what we reckoned scattered and dispersed is seen rank upon rank. We affirm none of this with certainty; we only listen to the root as it opens the possibility.
