Commentary
The verse begins with kallā, a word of rebuke and restraint that cleanly cuts off what came before it and turns the one addressed back from the state he is in. The preceding speech concerned a human being who rejoices in wealth and reckons honouring to lie in ease and lowliness in want; kallā comes to break that reckoning and to say: the matter is not as you supposed. It marks the dividing edge between a claim rejected and a truth set down after it.
Placed at the head of the verse, kallā halts the listener for a pause before what follows, so that he is not carried along with the false judgement he had grown easy with. The verse then opens upon a scene that undoes every scale: a day on which the earth is made level with itself, so that neither ease nor want is left a place against which it may be measured.
Idhā ("when") is an adverb for what is yet to come and certain to occur; it awaits its time, and its being is not in doubt. The verb dukkat, from the root d-k-k, turns on the firm thrust that brings the high down and levels it with what lies around it. To dakka a wall is to pull it down and make it a dakk level with the ground, and the dakk is flat land without any rise in it. The verb is in the passive, dukkat, which hides the doer and brings the earth itself forward as it is pounded: an overpowering ability comes down upon it, and the earth receives it without refusal.
The pounding here is the removal of all that stood high until it is even with what lay low, not a splitting or a swallowing down: mountains come down and hollows rise until the earth becomes a single expanse with no mark upon it. This is a severer undoing than a breaking, because a breaking leaves its trace behind, while the pounding erases every difference, so that no witness remains to what once was.
The verb is followed by its verbal noun, repeated: dakkan dakkan. The verbal noun affirms the act and makes it certain, and its repetition twice adds to that affirmation the sense of succession and of covering the whole, that is, a pounding after a pounding that leaves no place in the earth unlevelled. The levelling comes as a pounding followed by a pounding until it reaches every patch of ground, not as one stroke that strikes one quarter and spares another.
In this repetition the sound copies the meaning: a blow, then a blow, coming down upon the earth one after another until every rise is stilled. The form thus gathers severity and exhaustiveness together, severity in each pounding and exhaustiveness in the succession of pounding upon pounding, so that nothing slips away from the levelling.
The verse opens with kallā, a restraint that cuts off the reckoning of one who supposed honouring to lie in ease and lowliness in want, and returns the scales to their right. Idhā then opens upon a coming that is certain, and dukkat (d-k-k) denotes a firm thrust that brings the high down and levels it with what lies around it; its passive build brings the earth forward as it receives an overpowering ability that cannot be refused. The repetition in dakkan dakkan adds to the affirmation both succession and completeness: a pounding after a pounding that leaves no rise standing. So the verse erases every difference in the earth on the day of the undoing; once its marks are gone, no place is left against which ease or want may be measured, and the restraint with which it opened is proved true.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"No indeed! When the earth is pounded flat, a pounding upon a pounding" is read within the scene of the Day of Standing: kallā is a restraint to the human being mentioned earlier, who reckoned blessing to be honoring and trial to be humiliation; idhā ("when") points to what occurs on that Day, when the earth is leveled, its structures brought down and its mountains set moving, until it becomes a smooth bare plain. The scene prepares for the coming of the Lord and the angels rank upon rank in the verses that follow.
A reading that sets the verse within the detail of the terrors of the Day of rising and reckoning.
A root-reading
Kallā: a restraint that cuts off a rejected reckoning and turns the addressee back. Dukkat (root d-k-k): a steady downward thrust that brings the high down until it is even with what surrounds it, with no rise left; the passive form brings the earth forward as it receives an ability that cannot be resisted. Al-arḍ (root ʾ-r-ḍ): the fixed expanse settled upon. Dakkan dakkan: a repetition that affirms and yields succession and totality. The verse becomes: "Not as you supposed, for when an overpowering thrust descends upon the settled earth, leveling its rises, a leveling after a leveling that leaves no difference."
A reading that hears in the root the shape of a descending leveling, and in the repetition its totality and succession.
The two readings do not conflict. The first details the scene of the Day and its place in the Surah; the second hears, in the root, the shape of a leveling thrust, and in the repetition its totality. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
1. The rebuke precedes the scene, breaking the scale before its undoing is shown
Kallā is placed before "when the earth is pounded," so the speech begins by breaking the reckoning and then follows it with the scene that confirms the breaking. The one who reckoned honoring to lie in ease and abasement in want was weighing by an earth he supposed fixed and settled. The restraint comes first, then the pounding of the earth comes as a proof: the scale he had grown easy with rests on what is about to be pounded flat.
2. The leveling erases the distinctions on which the claim was built
The pounding (d-k-k) is the removal of every rise until the high is even with the low. What the human being exalted himself by, height of place or of possession, is only a rise upon the expanse of the earth. When the earth is pounded, a pounding upon a pounding, these distinctions all go, and no high is left for a low to be measured against. The scene itself shows why the first scale was rejected.
3. The doubling of "pounding" prepares for the coming and the ranks that follow
A pounding after a pounding takes in the whole earth and leaves no place untouched, and so it clears the ground for what the Surah drives toward after it: a presenting in which all stand even on a single surface, with no veil and no rise. A total leveling is a necessary preparation for a standing in which no high screens a low.
Perhaps in dakkan dakkan, a pounding followed by a pounding, there may be a hint that the undoing of the earth's structure as we know it need not be a single event in one instant, but a succession of subsidings that returns the high to the level of the low, layer after layer. And what we observe in the earth, mountains lowering slowly and hollows being filled, may be of the same kind as this slow leveling, so that the greater pounding would be an end toward which the cosmos moves in small steps we hardly feel. We affirm none of this with certainty; we only listen to the root and the repetition as they open the possibility.
