﴾ The Jews will never be pleased with you, nor will the Christians, until you follow their particular way. Say: the guidance of God is the guidance. If you followed their inclinations after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have no close ally, no helper, from God. ﴿
Tarḍā, from r-ḍ-w, has for its nucleus r-ḍ, a running that thickens, until the wāw settles it into a standing state. Being pleased is not an acceptance of the moment, it is the taking root of acceptance until it becomes a permanent position. And the verse denies it with lan: an emphatic denial of the settling and not of the dealing itself. They may deal and they may talk, but the fixed acceptance will not arrive so long as its condition is the following of the milla.
Milla, from m-l-l, has for its nucleus m-l, a gathering that hangs on, with the second lām doubling the hold. A milla is a collective way of living that clings to its people and closes round them the way a frame closes round a picture. It is no synonym for religion in the modern sense, it is nearer to the customary way of a particular people, taking in creed and conduct and custom and tongue. So making the milla the condition of approval moves the seat of judgement off the soundness of the content and onto the place of belonging.
"The guidance of God is the guidance" is a form of restriction: guidance is defined by its source and not by those who carry it. Whatever any people hold that agrees with the source of guidance is guidance, and what is not from it is not guidance, even in the hand of one who counts himself among the People of the Book. The measure is not the identity of the carrier, it is his match with the source. And this settles the question of whether anything may be taken from what they hold: what matches the source is taken, what does not match it is left, with no fever of allegiance and no fever of contempt.
Ahwāʾ, from h-w-y, has for its nucleus h-w, a hollow that holds, and the yāʾ stretches the connection out. An inclination is a hollow round the self, pulling it downward, as in hawā yahwī, to fall, by an inward leaning that is dressed up as a conviction. And the verse sets "the guidance of God" against "their inclinations": the first a source that lifts and frees, the second a hollow that drops the one who has it. So the following of inclinations after knowledge is a descent taken with open eyes and not a stumble of ignorance.
The condition "after the knowledge that has come to you" raises the danger of answering an inclination: one who did not know is not treated as one who knew. And the wording "has come to you" makes the knowledge a presence that came down to you and not a thing you went out after, so whoever had enough raised to him and then chose the low ground has lost his excuse. "If you followed" is a supposition and not a report: a condition that would cut the nearness off were it ever to fall.
Walī, from w-l-y, is a nearness and a continuous holding-round. Naṣīr, from n-ṣ-r, is a reinforcement that drives in at a visible need. The first is a standing presence, the second a supply at the hour of need. And whoever follows inclinations after knowledge is left short on both sides: nobody to take charge of his affair in the open times, nobody to come to his aid in the tight ones. The address is to the one spoken to on its face and to the community underneath, on the rule that the prophets are addressed by beauty: the condition is impossible in his case, and it is a warning that goes right through every hearer.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: being pleased is an acceptance that settles, a milla is a way that closes round its people, the guidance of God is defined by its source and not by its carrier, an inclination is a hollow that drops the one who has it, and the close ally and the helper are two bonds that break away from whoever trades knowledge for the approval of a group.
From the root r-ḍ-w, "will never be pleased" is an emphatic denial of the settling of acceptance and not of the dealing itself; being pleased is not the moment of acceptance but its taking root until it becomes a fixed state, and it will not settle so long as its condition is the following of a milla. And from the root m-l-l, a milla is a way that clings to its people and closes round them as a frame closes round a picture, and it is no synonym for religion but nearer to the customary way of a particular people; so making it the condition of approval moves the seat of judgement off the soundness of the content and onto the place of belonging. The answer is decisive: "the guidance of God is the guidance" is a restriction that defines guidance by its source and not by those who carry it, so what matches the source is guidance and what does not match it is not guidance, even when it comes from one who counts himself among the People of the Book. And facing "the guidance of God" the verse sets, from the root h-w-y, "their inclinations": a hollow that surrounds and pulls downward, and the following of it after knowledge is a descent taken with open eyes and not a stumble of ignorance. Whoever prefers the inclinations loses two bonds: from the root w-l-y the nearness that stays close and is present in the open times, and from the root n-ṣ-r the reinforcement that drives in at the hour of the tightening. Guidance is a source and not a milla, and the choice between the two, once the knowledge has arrived, is counted.
