﴾ They are the ones who bought loss of the way with the way, and punishment with protection. How did they harden themselves against the fire? ﴿
"They are the ones" points back to those who hid the book in the verse before, so the ruling here extends theirs and does not open a new tier. The farness in the demonstrative is meant: pointing from a distance after blame separates the speech from the ones pointed at and keeps them from being confused with anyone else. And "bought", on the iftiʿāl pattern of sh-r-y, carries effort and intent: a bargain willed, in which the buyer pays a price in full awareness, neither in heedlessness nor under force. They were not carried over into the loss of the way; they laid the way down as its price and took the loss with their own hands. And the buying here is turned over: money is ordinarily paid out for the precious thing, while here the precious thing, the way, is paid out for the worthless one.
The root ḍ-l-l carries a weight that catches and stretches, doubled by the repeated lām: a swerve that pulls its owner far off and grows on him the further he goes. The root h-d-y stands against it: an emptying of the barriers and a joining to what is aimed at. And the bāʾ in "with the way" is the bāʾ of exchange and not of fastening, as when a house is said to be sold for money. So the movement here is a losing and not a gain: a man pays out the lightness and the joining, and takes the weight and the distance in their place. The way is not an outward holding to be traded off; it is a disposition lodged in the root of the human, his fiṭra, so that when he pays it out as a price he impoverishes himself of the nearest thing he had.
The first bargain sits in the layer of conduct, the loss of the way traded for the way; the second sits in the layer of recompense, punishment traded for protection. The wāw joining them says the two exchanges go together and do not come apart: whoever paid out the way within has paid out the covering without along with it. The root ʿ-dh-b is a bitter return that goes through and stays fastened to its owner, and the root gh-f-r is a screening cover that extends and cuts the fault away from the one who did it. So the exchange doubles the loss: they gave away what screens and guards, and took what pierces and stays. And setting "punishment" before "protection" in the order of the sale uncovers the inward order: the punishment is what they bought first, in intent, and the protection is what they paid.
The fāʾ branches the outcome off the bargain: having paid out the way and the covering, this is what they came to. And "how" is the particle of wonder, with the verb of wonder built on the pattern afʿala; no praise is meant by it here, only the showing of the strangeness of the scene and the refusal of it. The root ṣ-b-r is in its build a firm hardness that stands out and runs on, and ṣabarahu is to hold a thing and fix it in place. Hardness in itself is a strength, but here it is aimed towards ruin and not towards deliverance. And the verse says "against the fire" and not "towards the fire": the preposition it uses is the one of resting upon and settling, so they are settled on the road that runs into it, pressing on rather than merely walking, as though they had sat down in it before ever reaching it. The wonder is that their hardness is real. It is a hardness held out for the error and not for the truth.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity, and the one who has lost the way is not a name thrown at an opponent; it is the role a man falls into when he pays out the way lodged in his own fiṭra as the price of a swerve he chose with his will entire, and settles on the road of ruin with a hardness that is real and turned the wrong way.
The verse is a cutting summary of those who hid the book in the verse before: "They are the ones who bought loss of the way with the way, and punishment with protection." The bargain runs on two levels that do not come apart. The first is in the layer of conduct, ḍ-l-l, a stretching weight that pulls its owner far off, set against h-d-y, an emptying of the barriers and a joining to what is aimed at. The second is in the layer of recompense, ʿ-dh-b, a bitterness that goes through, set against gh-f-r, a screening cover that extends. And the bāʾ of exchange uncovers what the bargain really was: they gave the precious and took the worthless, with their will entire. And the close, "How did they harden themselves against the fire?", is a searching refusal cast in the form of wonder: their hardness is real, from ṣ-b-r, a firmness that holds and fixes in place, but it is turned the wrong way, and the preposition "against" uncovers that they are settled on the course and not passing along it.
