﴾ Those who hide what God has sent down of the book and sell it for a small price are putting only fire into their stomachs. God will not speak to them on the day of standing, nor will He purify them. For them is painful punishment. ﴿
The particle of emphasis opens the verse and prepares the ground for the heavy news coming after it. The relative "those who" is linked by a verb in the imperfect, "hide", and not by a verb in the past, and the imperfect here says an act kept up and renewed, not an incident that passed: these are a people for whom hiding has become a standing habit, not a slip that happened once. The root k-t-m has for its nucleus k-t, a holding shut with force, and the mīm seals it with adhesion; so katm in its build is to hold a thing inside oneself so completely that nothing of it shows. That is what parts it from the general word for concealing: concealing puts a thing out of sight, while katm shuts it away entire. And "what God has sent down of the book" carries a partitive "of": the act does not reach as far as denying the whole book, it hides parts chosen out of it to serve an interest. The partitive matters. The one who hides is not denying the revelation in the round; he keeps of it what serves him and screens off what would show his interest for what it is. Selective hiding is fouler than an outright denial, because it leaves a covering of visible uprightness over an act that unpicks the trust from within.
"Sell" comes on the iftiʿāl pattern of the root sh-r-y, and that pattern in this root turns over on its face. Buying is in origin to hand over the price and take the goods, but the sense in Qurʾānic usage has turned to handing over the precious thing and taking a price for it, so "he bought a price with it" means "he sold it for that price". The turn is not an accident of the language; it uncovers what the bargain really is. It looks like the purchase of a benefit close at hand; it is in truth the sale of a trust greater than anything bought. The bāʾ in "for it" is the bāʾ of exchange, its pronoun going back to what was hidden: the hidden thing is the currency of their bargain. And "a price" comes indefinite, which belittles and diminishes; it was not given the article, because it does not deserve a name. The turn of phrase is exact: the root th-m-n has for its nucleus th-m, a packed accumulation that weighs the scale down, and yet the word set beside it is "small", from q-l-l. Putting the packed word for price next to the description of smallness uncovers a contradiction lying inside the bargain: the buyer thinks he is gathering a packed value, and in the true weighing everything he takes is small. Every price taken in exchange for the signs of God is small, however great it looks in the eye of the one who took it.
"Those" is the demonstrative of the far, and setting it before the predicate first cuts them off from everyone else and then rules on them with what they have earned. The distance in the demonstrative is not a distance of place but of blame: these have been put out of the ranks of the trustworthy, and so are pointed at from far off. And "are putting only fire into their stomachs" is an emptying exception and not an establishing one, as at verse 171: on its face it establishes that fire is what is eaten, and in truth it drains their eating of everything else. Whatever enters their stomachs by the price of hiding, however good it looks to a watcher, is nothing but fire in the reckoning of things as they are. And "into their stomachs" fixes the place with precision. It might be counted a flourish; it is in fact what exposes the picture. Food taken by a forbidden price may enter the mouth as a thing desired, and may pass the throat as a thing pleasant, but when it reaches the belly, where it settles and gives what it has to give, it yields nothing but fire. The belly here is where the last verdict on food is passed, not the tongue with its pleasure and not the throat with its catch.
The two negations, "will not speak to them" and "nor will He purify them", are joined by wāw, which gathers without ordering; but the choice of these two verbs and of no others carries its own sense. For the first, the root k-l-m has for its nucleus k-l, a holding made to adhere, and the mīm seals it with gathering; so speech in its build is a holding made to adhere and to gather, a meaning held inside a sound and fastened onto the one addressed. To bar that address is heavier than any punishment the senses can take: it cuts the channel by which a creature lives towards the one who made it, on a day when it needs the least answer from the Merciful. And binding the denial to "the day of standing" adds to its weight: on the day when every being would give anything for one word, they are denied precisely that, a recompense in the kind of their own act. Whoever hid the speech that God sent down, so that people would not reach it, is screened from the speech of God on a day when no one else has speech. For the second, the root z-k-w has for its nucleus z-k, a packed growth pressing out from within, and purifying is in origin the releasing of that inward growth by clearing away what holds it back; the verb comes doubled, which carries the act over onto the one who receives it with force. So purifying is an act going out from the one who purifies to the one purified, freeing the packed pure thing inside him. Barring that act from them means that they stay as they are, mixed and held: nothing pure is released out of them and nothing foreign is lifted off them. This too is a recompense in the kind of their act, since they held back the guidance that ought to have grown in people, and so what ought to have grown in them of purity was held back from them.
The lām in "for them" is the lām of assignment: the punishment is marked out for them by desert, not a general penalty that catches them along with others. And "painful punishment" comes indefinite, which magnifies and leaves open: a punishment of a kind that outruns the descriptions known. The root ʿ-dh-b was opened at verse 165: the nucleus ʿ-dh is an appearing that moves across roughly, and the bāʾ seals it with going out; so punishment in its build is a going out from sweetness into bitterness, which is why water is called ʿadhb when it has turned sweet, punishment being the return to the opposite of that sweetness. And "painful" stands on the pattern faʿīl, which in Arabic is the likened adjective and says fixity and inseparability. The root ʾ-l-m has for its nucleus ʾ-l, a firm cutting that falls and then clings and does not come away, and the mīm gathers what has clung and closes over it; so pain in its build is a limit that falls, then catches, then shuts, a description of what takes hold and not of what is taken. It was not said "a punishment that pains", with the participle that says the working of pain into a thing, but "painful", in the form that makes the description inseparable from what it describes: the punishment is painful in its own nature and needs no agent to put the pain in it. And so the warning closes with four penalties in sequence: fire in the belly, the cutting off of speech, the withholding of purifying, and a punishment that will not come loose. The order is exact: from the cutting of the material channels of provision, to the cutting of the channels of meaning with the Merciful, to a punishment that holds fast to the last outcome.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity. The one who knows is not a term for titles handed out by the measure of what has been memorised; it is the role of one to whom the truth was sent down to be passed on and not to be shut away. If he hides, and picks out of the book what serves his interest, then a carrier of the truth has turned into one who withholds it, and he has earned that the address be cut off from him on the day he needs the least word, and that the purifying he denied to people be denied to him.
The verse turns hiding into a piece of trade: "hide what God has sent down of the book and sell it for a small price". Katm, from k-t-m, is a shutting away so complete that it parts from ordinary concealing: nothing of it shows. And the partitive "of" uncovers the shape of the act: not a denial of the whole book but a picking out of the parts that serve a private interest, and this is the fouler thing, because it keeps the covering of uprightness over an act that unpicks the trust from within. Then a fourfold penalty follows. "Are putting only fire into their stomachs" is an emptying exception that makes everything entering the belly by the price of hiding into fire in the reckoning of things as they are. Then "God will not speak to them on the day of standing": whoever hid the speech God sent down is screened from the speech of God on a day when no one else has speech. Then "nor will He purify them": purifying, from z-k-w, is a packed growth released, and whoever held back the growth of guidance in people has the growth of purity held back from him. And the seal, "for them is painful punishment", stands on the pattern faʿīl for what is fixed and inseparable. A recompense in the kind of the act, at every layer.
