﴾ Like the persistent way of Pharaoh's house and those before them: they denied Our signs, so Allah seized them by what trailed from their deeds. Allah is severe in consequence. ﴿
The particle of likeness at the head of the verse opens a comparison, setting what came before, the falling away of an illusion, beside the daʾb of "Pharaoh's house and those before them." The term daʾb, from d-ʾ-b, carries a steadiness upon which an act is cut and fixed, and then clings to the one who bears it. A daʾb is work repeated until it becomes a shape by which its own channel is recognized, not a single event standing alone.
The verse uses the noun daʾb in place of a telling of many separate deeds. The noun gathers what was scattered into one pattern, and the sentence then names the act that uncovers it: "they denied Our signs." What is repeated becomes a road that carries those who walk it to its own outcome, no longer a spray of incidents.
Kadhdhabū, from k-dh-b, stands in the doubled form, which fixes denial as an act repeated and set facing the signs; the signs themselves are marks joined to the speaker: "Our signs." The connecting fāʾ in "so Allah seized them" then ties the opening to its result, leaving no gap in the structure of the sentence. Seizing, from ʾ-kh-dh, is a grasp that pierces and drives through until what is taken lies within the reach of the one who takes.
The verse does not say that the marks grew weak when they were denied; it moves those who did the denying out of the place of the ones acting and into the place of the ones acted upon: "so Allah seized them." Whoever tried to bring the sign down by speech found himself inside an act that his speech cannot push away.
The particle bi in "by what trailed from their deeds" joins the seizing to what issued from them. The noun dhanb, from dh-n-b, denotes a piercing that comes forth and then clings, like a tail that follows its bearer and does not come away from him. So the seizing appears here as the catching up of what went out of the act with the one who did it, not as an event with nothing before it.
The verse closes with "severe in consequence." ʿIqāb, from ʿ-q-b, is what comes on the heel of a thing while staying joined to it, and calling it severe refuses every weakening of that link. The persistent way holds fast, what trails from it follows, and the consequence arrives on the heel of what went before: the verse holds together as a chain, not as a series of separate blows.
The verse reads what is past in the shape of a daʾb: an act repeated until it held as a channel, with the denial of the marks at its heart. The fāʾ then joins denying to seizing, and the bi joins seizing to what trailed from the deeds and caught up with those who did them. The outcome comes out of the pattern's own tail and arrives on its heel, not brought in from outside the pattern. What becomes a persistent way builds the road that brings the one who carries it to its far end, rather than merely describing him.
