﴾ Be mindful of the Fire that has been prepared for the disbelievers. ﴿
The conjunction joins this command to the preceding command, the guarding of Allah, so the same act continues and only its object changes. In w-q-y, an opening bond encircles the one who holds it, the middle sound knots that bond in the depth, and the closing extension draws it out as a preservation set between the person and the Fire. The derived form makes the addressees fashion that bond themselves and on purpose, rather than wait to receive it, while the plural imperative lays upon everyone called by trust one and the same responsibility: to move away from what is to be feared.
The Fire stands as the direct object of the command, and so the guarding is given the one thing it must turn away from. The word derives from n-w-r, which denotes an issuing from within toward the outside that runs on into open appearance and radiance, an emanation that comes out from inside and spreads through what surrounds it. The word here, however, is al-nār rather than al-nūr, so what the wording carries is the burning stroke of an appearance already kindled. The definite article brings it into the address as a known reality, so that mindfulness falls upon one named thing, present in the wording and recognized by the one who hears it. The force of the command lies in that very naming: the danger has a name that is spoken, the guarding has an explicit object toward which it turns, and caution is not left hanging on a general feeling.
The feminine relative clause fastens onto the Fire and defines it by an act received upon it: it was prepared. In ʿ-d-d, a thing comes forward under pressure, the middle sound then holds it, and the repetition of that sound doubles the firmness of the hold, until what emerged stands ready and fixed for its end. The verb is in the passive, which leaves the Fire as the receiver of the act, and the past tense sets the preparing behind the command to guard as an accomplished reality, so that those addressed move away from a danger whose readiness has already settled.
The preposition joins the preparing of the Fire to the disbelievers. In k-f-r, an inward restraint holds down what had appeared, a narrow cleft opens, and the covering runs out through it until it takes hold of the one who does it. The form al-kāfirīn presents the people of that movement as standing in it and keeping it up. So the command comes to those who have trusted: let their guarding make a practical distance between them and the Fire, and between them and the course of covering to whose people its preparation was joined.
The conjunction carries the mindfulness of the preceding verse over to an explicit object, the Fire. The derived form asks for a preservation that is deliberate; the relative clause describes the Fire by a completed preparation received upon it; and the preposition ties that preparation to the disbelievers, whom the active participle defines by a movement of covering that continues. In the verse the Fire is a single name, and one name is enough to give the guarding its direction. Its preparing is past and complete, and its destination is joined to a movement rather than to a lineage. What is asked of those who have trusted is that they make the bond of guarding between themselves and what is to be feared, without entering the nature of those who bear it.
