﴾ O you who have trusted, do not consume usury as multiplied multiples. Be mindful of Allah, so that you may flourish. ﴿
The call opens a direct address, and the relative defines those addressed by an act already completed by them: they trusted, and it is that trust which is summoned to carry the prohibition. In ʾ-m-n a decisive cut settles into an inward containment and then issues from that interior outward as a security that shows in the act; this last face is what is meant here, since what follows the call is a demand concerning wealth, not a report about calm in the chest. The past tense establishes the response that has become the title of the address, while the prohibition and the command that follow require a present effect from it: at the moment of the call, trust is a bond still at work in dealing. They are therefore called by an act of trust that is to govern what they take and what they leave, not by the name of an inherited community.
The prohibitive particle enters upon a plural present, so it meets the addressees with a movement liable to occur and asks that it be stopped, and the prohibition keeps the increase from being brought into holding. Eating, from ʾ-k-l, is a cut that conceals and holds and then attaches and extends in holding, so what is eaten comes to be inside its owner or in his possession. The object of the prohibition is usury, which from r-b-w is a flow held under pressure that then connects in extension, so it carries an increase rising above its origin. What the wording forbids is the eating of that increase itself, its entry into holding as food enters the belly; choosing the verb of eating rather than of taking describes the increase as a thing its owner consumes until it becomes part of him.
"Multiples" is a state of the usury, or a statement of the shape of it that is forbidden, and it is a plural carrying recurrence and multiplication, so the increase eats itself by doubling. Doubling, from ḍ-ʿ-f, is a heavy joining that emerges from the depth and then opens a cleft, so a thing comes to stand beside its like and the amount recurs. "Multiplied" is a feminine passive participle agreeing with the nonhuman plural, carrying the doubling as something received upon it, and the reciprocal form brings out the entering of one double into another and the exchange of the increase with its own stages. The wording thus displays accumulation in its very shape: an amount upon which a doubling falls, then a second doubling upon what was already doubled, until what grows is the increase and no longer the principal.
The conjunction coordinates a positive command with the prohibition, be mindful of Allah, and the guarding carries the prohibition over onto the course of flourishing. In w-q-y a bond knots in depth and then extends and courses until it becomes a barrier between its bearer and what harms him, and the derived form makes the addressees the deliberate makers of that barrier, so the guarding is their own act and not something that descends upon them. Its object is the name of Allah, so the barrier is raised against what contradicts His right, not against a loss of wealth. "So that" opens the aim in flourishing, which comes from f-l-ḥ, a cleft that extends in attachment and then passes outward from the narrowing; the present tense carries a flourishing hoped for by walking in guarding.
The call summons the act of trust to carry a prohibition against eating usury in the shape of multiplied multiples. The roots display one clear movement: an eating that brings a thing into holding, a usury that increases above its origin, and multiples upon which the accumulation of doubling falls. This is exactly the movement the verse forbade, an increase that is doubled and then eaten. The verse then opens its positive face with guarding toward Allah and the hope of flourishing, so that leaving the increase becomes part of a wider preservation.
