﴾ A small enjoyment, then their refuge is Hell, and miserable is the resting place. ﴿
"Enjoyment" is indefinite and in the nominative within a terse sentence, and "small", indefinite like it, describes it. Enjoyment, from m-t-ʿ, is an extension cut off at its completion, gripped by the ʿayn while it lasts; it carries a benefit extended up to a limit. Smallness, from q-l-l, is a knotting in the depth that attaches, after which the lām repeats the attaching until the measure narrows. The text does not deny that the enjoyment exists; it judges its weight to be small. With two words only, a small enjoyment, the terseness answers the possibility of being deceived by the turning named before it.
"Then" is a conjunction of sequence with an interval, and it sets a separation between the small enjoyment and the sentence that follows. Within the structure, the value of the particle is that the first appearance is a stage followed by an outcome that differs from it in name and in judgement. The presence of "then" carries the reader from a bounded benefit to a refuge annexed to the owners of the pronoun; smallness is thus measured here by what comes after it, and the weight of the enjoyment is disclosed when the course is complete.
"Their refuge" is a subject annexed to the plural pronoun referring to the group named earlier, and "Hell" is its predicate in the nominative. Refuge, from ʾ-w-y, is a cutting that knots within a joining encompassment, after which the yāʾ extends it into a settling; it carries a place of return and of staying. The predicate, however, fixes this refuge by the name stated here and by nothing else. The annexation in "their refuge" makes the Fire the place of their return, and the predicate binds their own pronoun to the name given. The nominal predication is enough to establish the relation after "then".
The wāw coordinates the frozen verb of dispraise, "miserable", with "the resting place" as its definite subject. The resting place, from m-h-d, is a gathering into which the channel of the breath is emptied until it subsides, and which then holds fast under pressure; it carries a place smoothed out for settling. The entry of "miserable", however, judges it bad and does not allow the sense of smoothing to be understood as a praiseworthy rest. The noun serves to set the pairing of refuge and resting place against the plain verdict that it is miserable: a place laid flat for settling, and then judged bad.
The verse weighs the visible movement in three short shifts. It begins with an enjoyment that exists yet is described as small; "then" separates it from the outcome; the verse then ascribes the refuge to their own pronoun and names it Hell; and it closes by dispraising the resting place. Three words carry the whole weighing: "small" weighs the enjoyment, "then" divides the stage from the outcome, and "miserable" judges the resting place bad. The verbal contrast is enough: a bounded benefit, then a named shelter, then a name suggesting a bed made ready, which under "miserable" becomes a plain verdict upon a bad settling.
