﴾ How then, when We gather them for a day in which there is no doubt, and every self is paid in full what it earned, while they are not wronged? ﴿
The fāʾ joins the question to the fabricating that came before it: if the saying had delimited the touching, how then when the gathering falls? The question leaves its answer to the scene that follows, for the gathering described after it is enough by itself to undo the manufactured safety.
Gathering, from j-m-ʿ, is a coming together in a space that holds close and then brings out what had lain in the depth. The "We" returns the gathering to Allah, and the "them" returns the scattered to one place; what the fabricating had parted into private reckonings is knit together in the gathering scene.
The lām makes the day the end toward which the gathering moves. Doubt, rayb, from r-y-b, is a flow that runs in the soul and is then held back from its resting place, and so raises an unsteadiness that will not settle. The denial of doubt does not say that no one doubts; it says that the day in itself carries no place that would make it doubtful.
Full payment, tawfiya, from w-f-y, is a joining that penetrates and parts detail from detail, then extends until it reaches completion. The passive build of the verb makes every self the site of a complete delivery. The self, nafs, from n-f-s, is an emergence that penetrates and then runs on: the being out of which the act goes and to which its trace comes back.
Earning, kasb, from k-s-b, is a withholding that extends in a flow and then attaches itself to its owner, that is, what a person draws into his account by his act. Each self is paid "what it earned," what it made into a link with itself, not something foreign to it.
Wrong, ẓulm, from ẓ-l-m, is a covering that closes over a thing and takes hold of it, keeping it within, and so it sets a thing outside its place. Its denial keeps the full payment from any increase and from any shortfall. The gathering does not erase the single one, and no self carries anything but what its own earning joined to it.
The gathering meets the illusion of numbered days: people are brought together for a day with no unsteadiness in its reality, and to every self its harvest is paid entire. "Every" does not let a self hide inside the crowd, the denial of wrong does not let the reckoning carry to it what it did not earn, and what the self made outside itself comes back to it whole.
