﴾ Indeed, those who purchase with Allah's covenant and their oaths a small price, those have no share in the Hereafter. Allah will not speak to them, nor look toward them on the Day of Rising, nor purify them; and for them is a painful punishment. ﴿
"Indeed" fixes the description before it sets out where it leads. Purchasing, from sh-r-y, is a drawing together that runs through and then extends in the flow of an exchange. The preposition places Allah's covenant and their oaths on the side of what is given up to obtain the price. Covenant is a bond that appears from depth and is held firm by fixity; price, from th-m-n, is a density that knits into a held measure, and the text here describes that measure as "small."
The demonstrative separates the result and fastens it upon the bearers of the preceding description. "No share for them" tears out their portion in the Hereafter. Share, from kh-l-q, is a piercing that passes into its place, then clings to it and knots in depth, as though the portion were a thing apportioned that connects to its holder; here that connection is cut. A severe correspondence then stands between a small price taken in the near term and a share denied in the Hereafter.
The chain of conjunctions begins, adding to the denial of the share the denial of being spoken to, and then the denial of any look toward them. The agent of the first is stated outright: Allah. The pronoun returns to those who sold the bond for the small price. The looking is then tied to "toward them," and "the Day of Rising" gathers the two denials within a single time. The force of the construction lies in the repetition of "not" and in its passing from the severance of a portion to the severance of any turning toward them.
The third denial attaches to the verb "purify them." Purity, from z-k-w, is a compacting that runs through sharply, after which the following letter winds around it in a containment that keeps its growth. Form II in "purifies" carries a charge that stays with its act and repeats it, yet "not" denies that this act falls upon them. The same pronoun comes in all three verbs, so the scene is ordered without scattering: no speech for them, no look toward them, no purifying that reaches them.
After four sentences of denial, the conjunction returns with an affirmed sentence: "and for them is a painful punishment." Fronting "for them" binds the outcome to them directly. Punishment, from ʿ-dh-b, is an emerging from depth that passes through sharply and then connects to its place and holds to it. The description "painful" carries pain over from an abstract noun into a description of the punishment itself, so the sequence closes by affirming what reaches them. Pain is the description the verse chose for this punishment, and it answers "a small price" at the head of the verse: a small measure taken in the exchange, and a punishment described as painful reaching whoever took it.
The verse sets Allah's covenant and the oaths inside a scene of disordered exchange: a small price is taken by means of them, and what answers that is the denial of any share in the Hereafter. "Not" then follows upon "not" three times: no speech, no look toward them on the Day of Rising, no purifying. In the close the rhythm turns over from denial to affirmation: for them is a painful punishment. So the composition discloses that the small price joins the act of exchange to a chain of deprivation and then to an affirmed outcome, rather than staying a passing bargain.
