﴾ Yes: whoever fulfills his covenant and guards, indeed Allah loves the guarding. ﴿
"Yes" opens the verse as an answer to their preceding saying, "there is no way against us." Rather than beginning some distant subject, it undoes the negation and establishes what the saying tried to make fall. By that the course turns from an excuse that ties trustworthiness to the identity of the other side into a rule that begins with "whoever" and opens it to everyone who carries the act. "Yes" needs no long telling; its place right after the claim makes it a cut that refuses the exemption and returns the scale to the covenant and the guarding.
"Whoever" comes as a general condition, and then defines the one it names by the act of fulfilling. Fulfilling, from w-f-y, is an enclosing that pierces into its place, reaches the whole of it, and then extends to completion. Covenant, from ʿ-h-d, is an appearing out of the depth that opens a channel for the breath to run in, and then holds firm under pressure and settling; that is, a bond that is present and held to measure. The preposition joins the fulfilling to the covenant, and the pronoun binds each one to his own covenant. So the rule asks after the completeness of what the one entrusted took upon himself, not the name of the one to whom the right is owed.
The conjunction couples guarding to fulfilling, so that neither of the two stands alone in the condition. Guarding, from w-q-y, is an enclosing that knots itself in the depth and draws tight around its place, then extends in a softness and a flowing that preserve it. The eighth form brings the doer inside the work of guarding and makes him intend it. The verb is in the past, as the verb of fulfilling was, which fixes the completion of both movements in the place of the condition. Guarding in this condition is a preserving that accompanies the discharge of the covenant and keeps it from becoming an outward movement with no inside. That is why it was coupled to fulfilling in the same clause, so that the condition became two acts and not one.
The fāʾ of the answer ties the condition to the emphatic "indeed Allah." Love, from ḥ-b-b, is a holding that joins and clings to the one loved, after which the repeated letter doubles the bond and makes it fast. The object of the love is "the guarding," not the name of a group or a line of descent. "The guarding" is an active participle, which makes guarding a working nature that continues in those who carry it. So the verb of guarding returns out of the condition in the shape of a noun on which the love settles, and the answer binds the intended preserving to a firmly knotted divine bond.
"Yes" undoes the claim that had made the way fall, then raises in its place a rule that does not hang on the identity of the one to whom the right is owed. Whoever carried his covenant through to completion and kept himself in guarding has entered under the answer. The connective brings the emphatic love of Allah for the guarding, not a detailed material recompense. So the covenant passes out of excuse into discharge, guarding passes out of a completed act into a working nature that continues, and the love attaches to that nature and not to the name of a group.
