﴾ As for those, it may be that Allah will pardon them (yaʿfuwa ʿanhum); Allah has ever been effacing, covering. ﴿
The fāʾ joins this verse to the exception before it, and "those" points to the nearest of those mentioned: those held weak who can command no means and are guided to no way. The verdict in the ninety-seventh verse opened with the same words, "those, their shelter is Jahannam", and here "those" opens the sentence a second time, so the two pointings face each other: the first for those before whom the earth lay wide and who did not move, the second for those whom means and way failed, and each has its own predicate.
The predicate of "those" here is a sentence with ʿasā: "it may be that Allah will pardon them". ʿAsā is from ʿ-s-y: a thing nearing its way out through a narrow passage and not yet out, so it is a word of hope for what is expected to come about. The hope in the verse is bound to the name of Allah: the name of Allah is the subject of ʿasā, and an yaʿfuwa, a verb cast with an into the sense of a verbal noun, stands as its predicate, so pardon for them is hoped for from Allah. The wording keeps the matter in the form of a hope and places it in the hand of the One hoped in.
ʿAfw, pardon, is from ʿ-f-w: a trace scattered and carried off until its place is empty; one says ʿafat al-rīḥu al-athar when the wind has wiped out a track so that no mark of it is left. ʿAnhum, "from them", makes the pardon a passing-over that goes by them and does not stop at what stands against them. Pardon requires something to be pardoned, and what is pardoned in this verse stays open; the hope is hung on the pardon itself, for those in whom the lack of means and the lack of a way came together.
The verse then closes on two names, the first from the root of the very verb that was hoped for, yaʿfuwa and then ʿafuwwan, so the hope bound by ʿasā rests on a standing attribute of the One hoped in, and kāna fixes it without limit of time. ʿAfuww, on the pattern faʿūl, marks abundance of effacing, and ghafūr, from gh-f-r, a thick cover that comes over a thing and holds on it to shield it, is on faʿūl as well, so both are forms of abundance that fall on a trace from two sides: an effacing that carries it off, and a covering that hides it.
The forty-third verse closed on the same two names in the same order, "Allah has ever been effacing, covering", and they come together in the accusative in these two verses only: there they close a verse that opened a way for whoever found no water, and here they close a hope for whoever found no means and no way, so in both places the two names come after a lack.
With "those" the verse points to the ones excepted in the verse before, facing the "those" with which the verdict of the ninety-seventh verse opened, and it makes their predicate a hope bound to the name of Allah: "it may be that Allah will pardon them". ʿAsā, from ʿ-s-y, is a thing nearing its way out and not yet out; pardon, from ʿ-f-w, is a trace scattered until its place is empty; and what is pardoned stays open in the verse. The verse then rests the hope on two standing attributes, "effacing, covering", abundant effacing and abundant covering, the two names that closed the forty-third verse after a lack of water and that close this one after a lack of means and of a way.
