Commentary
After the verdict on those who did not migrate and the exception for those who could not, the verse brings two conditions that speak of the migrant himself. The first: "whoever migrates in the way of Allah will find in the earth many a place of defiance and ampleness". Man is conditional and puts both its verb, yuhājir, and its answer, yajid, in the jussive, so the finding is bound to the migrating as an answer is bound to its condition. Migrating, from h-j-r, is leaving a place its owner empties for a place where he gathers with others, and it is bound here by "in the way of Allah", a migration along a particular path. "In the earth" is the earth the angels called wide in the ninety-seventh verse, so the verse answers that question with a statement: whoever migrates finds.
Murāghaman is from r-gh-m, a root that occurs in the Book only in this word. Raghām is soft earth; arghama anfahu is to press someone's nose into it; then whatever happens against a person's will is said to be ʿalā raghmihi, "in spite of him", and rāghama fulānan is to part from someone and go against him to his displeasure. Murāgham, on the pattern mufāʿal, names the place where this going-against takes place, and the pattern requires another party who is gone against. The migrant finds in the earth places to settle, and his settling there is a going-against of a party he left behind; kathīran, "many", makes these places numerous across the earth, not confined to one.
Saʿatan, ampleness, is from w-s-ʿ, the root with which those taken were questioned in the ninety-seventh verse, "was not the earth of Allah wide", so what came there as a question to those who did not migrate comes here as something found by the one who migrates. The ampleness is unqualified in the verse: it may be ampleness of place, of living, or of one's whole affair, and the verse leaves it at its full extent.
The second condition is narrower than the first: "whoever goes out of his house migrating to Allah and His messenger". Going out, from kh-r-j, is passing through the enclosure that holds a person to what lies beyond it until he stands exposed, and the enclosure here is "his house"; bayt is the place where one spends the night, the nearest thing that surrounds a person and in which he is cut off from what lies beyond, so the going out begins from the place that clings closest to its owner. Muhājiran, "migrating", describes the state that stays with the going out: he goes out while in his migration.
The particle that carries the direction has changed: in the first condition "in the way of Allah", in the second "to Allah and His messenger". Ilā marks the end of a course, so the goal of this going out is Allah and His messenger, a goal that no land bounds. In this condition migration is measured by its direction from the first step, and this is how what follows is to be understood.
After the going out comes "then death overtakes him". Overtaking, idrāk, is from d-r-k: a pursuit that runs toward its mark until it catches up with what is ahead of it and meets it, so the migrant is a traveller going forward, and death catches up with him and takes him on his way. Death, from m-w-t, is an extension cut at its completion: the life has reached its completion and been cut, while the road has not reached its end. Thumma, "then", sets between the going out and the death an interval that is not measured. The same verb is set with death as its subject in the seventy-eighth verse, "wherever you may be, death will overtake you", so death overtakes the one who stays and the one who travels alike, and they differ in the place where it takes them.
The answer to the condition: "his reward has fallen upon Allah". Qad with the past fixes the falling and makes it certain. Falling, wuqūʿ, is from w-q-ʿ: a thing whose course runs on until it knots in its resting place and holds fast there; from it, waqaʿa al-ṭāʾir, the bird came down and settled. It is as if the reward had been travelling with the migrant on his road, and when the road was cut it came down in a single place, "upon Allah", and "upon" makes it a due that stands firm with Him. Ajr, reward, is from ʾ-j-r: a measure that gathers for the worker on what he has done and is then paid over to him, and here it has fallen before its owner reached his goal.
The verse sets this death against the one in the ninety-seventh verse: there the angels take people in the place they never left, here death overtakes on his road one who went out, so the passage shows two deaths, the death of one who did not go out and the death of one who went out and did not arrive. The verse then closes on the close of the ninety-sixth verse: "Allah has ever been covering, compassionate".
The verse completes what the angels' question began: whoever migrates in the way of Allah will find in the earth many a murāgham, places to settle against the will of a party left behind, and will find ampleness, from the root with which those who did not migrate were questioned, unqualified. It then singles out whoever goes out of his house, the nearest thing around him, migrating to Allah and His messenger, so that his goal is a direction that no land bounds; and if death overtakes him on his road, a life's extension cut at its completion, his reward has fallen upon Allah and come down to rest with Him before he arrived. The passage thus shows two deaths, the death of one who did not go out and the death of one who went out, and it closes on the two names that closed the ninety-sixth verse.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as concerning a man who was ill among his people; when he heard what had come down about those who did not migrate, he told his family to carry him, set out from his house seeking the Prophet, and died on the road, and the verse came down about him. Murāgham is taken as the place one turns to, the refuge to which the migrant goes and by which he defies his people; the ampleness as ampleness of provision, or the passage from narrowness to ampleness; and "his reward has fallen upon Allah" as his reward having become due. The verse is cited to show that whoever sets out on a sound deed and dies before completing it has its reward written for him in full.
A reading that ties the verse to a man who died on the road of his migration, and takes the murāgham as a refuge and the ampleness as provision.
A root-reading
Yuhājir (root h-j-r): emptying one place for another gathering. Murāghaman (root r-gh-m): a place settled in against the will of a party left behind. Yakhruj (root kh-r-j): passing from inside an enclosure to its outside. Yudrik-hu (root d-r-k): a pursuit that catches up with what is ahead of it. Al-mawt (root m-w-t): an extension cut at its completion. Waqaʿa (root w-q-ʿ): a course that knots in its resting place. The verse becomes: "Whoever empties his place in the way of Allah finds in the earth many places to settle against the will of those he left, and finds ampleness; and whoever passes out of his house facing toward Allah and His messenger, and then the cutting of his life catches up with him on the road, his reward has come down with Allah and settled."
A reading that hears in the verse a going out measured by its direction, and a reward that settles at the hour the road is cut.
The two readings do not conflict. The first ties the verse to a man who died on his road and takes the ampleness as provision; the second hears, in the roots, places that go against what was left, a road that a pursuer cuts, and a reward that comes down to rest. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Migration, from h-j-r, is emptying a place and going out to another gathering; murāgham, from r-gh-m, is soft earth against which whatever is thrown down is pressed; going out, from kh-r-j, is passing from inside an enclosure to its outside; overtaking, from d-r-k, is a pursuit that reaches what is ahead of it; death, from m-w-t, is an extension cut at its completion; falling, from w-q-ʿ, is a course that knots in its resting place. The letters draw a going out of a narrow enclosure, places in the earth that go against what was left, a road that a pursuer from behind may cut, and a reward that comes down to rest at the hour of the cut.
Second: the scene
The migrant goes out of his house, the nearest thing that surrounded him, facing toward Allah and His messenger, with the earth open before him in many places and in ampleness. Then death catches up with him on the road before he arrives: the journey is cut in a place that was not its goal, and in that very moment his reward falls upon Allah. Across its four verses the scene passes through four states: one taken in his place, one held back because he has no means, one who migrated and found ampleness in the earth, and one who went out and was taken on his way.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
Many people put off going out of a state that hems them in, fearing they will not reach what they aim at, and so make arrival a condition of setting out. The verse separates the two: the reward falls by the going out and the direction, even if death cuts the road. A second pattern recurs: the earth that looks narrow to the one who stays may show itself wide and full of places to the one who goes out in it, so the ampleness in the verse is the answer to migrating, "will find" after "migrates", found by going out and perhaps not seen from inside.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The order of the verse may parallel what Everett Lee set out in his article "A Theory of Migration" (1966), where he traced every migration to four things: factors in the place of origin that is left, factors in the place of destination, obstacles that stand between the two, and personal factors in the migrant himself; among these obstacles he counted distance, physical barriers and the restrictions of laws. The verse names the place of origin by the nearest thing that surrounds a person, "his house", describes the destination as "many a place of defiance and ampleness", makes the migrant's direction "to Allah and His messenger", and then names an obstacle that cuts the road itself: "then death overtakes him". The difference may lie in this, that the verse grants the migrant his reward before arrival, so this last obstacle takes nothing from his reward.
Murāgham may also meet what Albert Hirschman described in his book "Exit, Voice, and Loyalty" (1970): whoever finds matters worsening in a group, an organization or a state has two paths before him, to leave it or to raise his voice within it; loyalty slows the leaving and strengthens the voice, and leaving is itself, for him, a signal that reaches those who are left and alerts them to what has gone wrong with them. The murāgham the verse names, a place settled in against the will of a party left behind, may be of this kind: a going out whose effect falls on those who stayed behind. Perhaps the mention of "his house" in the verse points to the strongest tie binding a person to his place, the loyalty that slows leaving in Hirschman's account, and the verse begins the migration from there.
