﴾ And I, I have chosen you; so set yourself to hear what is being conveyed. ﴿
The pronoun comes forward three times in three verses, and this is the second of them. It was said "I, I am your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer)"; here it is said "And I, I have chosen you"; and after this it is said "I, I am Allah." Each time the speaker is set in front of what is told of him.
The verb is in the past: "I have chosen you," not "I choose you" and not "I will choose you." The choosing took place and was finished before it was known, and the one addressed hears of it only now. He came seeking a fire, and he had been chosen before he ever set out toward it.
The root kh-y-r denotes a soft piercing that runs and extends, that is, what enters a thing and courses through it as benefit. The verb ikhtāra is on the pattern iftaʿala, the eighth form, which turns the act back onto its doer: he took for himself. What was said is "I have chosen you," not "I have chosen a messenger," and the object is a pronoun, not a description.
Then a fāʾ, "so," that sets things in order. The choosing comes first and the command to listen second, and the listening is asked for, not waited on to happen. He was commanded to listen because he was chosen, not chosen because he listened.
The imperative istamiʿ is on the pattern iftaʿala, the eighth form, its t set after the root's first letter, and here the form carries effort, an act taken on. The root s-m-ʿ is a pouring that gathers and reaches the depth. Hearing happens without intent, while listening is a work one takes on and makes ready for; what was commanded is the second, not the first.
The lām in li-mā, "to what," fastens the ear to what is heard: a listening to one thing in particular, not a listening into the air.
The verse's last words then hold three things back. Mā, "what," is an undefined relative: what is to be heard is neither named nor described. He is told to listen, and he is not told to what.
The verb yūḥā is built on the passive, as "he was called" was built two verses back. The one who conveys is not named in the verb, though the verse before named him with the pronoun of the one speaking; the verb is left in the passive while the speaker is present, speaking.
The tense, too, is present: "to what is being conveyed," not "to what was conveyed," a matter running now and not yet complete. He was commanded to listen to something whose coming down is not yet complete.
The root w-ḥ-y denotes a conveying through a narrow channel that runs hidden. So the channel, at the root of the word, is narrow and covered, while what is asked of the man is the widest attention he has. He was commanded to open the whole of his hearing to the finest thing that runs.
A pronoun coming forward, the second of three times in three verses, then a verb in the past and not the present: "I have chosen you" is a matter finished before it was heard of. Kh-y-r is a soft piercing that runs as benefit, iftaʿala turns the taking back onto the taker, and the object is a pronoun, not a description. A fāʾ follows that sets things in order: a choosing, then a listening, and not a listening by which a choosing is earned. Istamiʿ, of the eighth form, is effort taken on, and s-m-ʿ is a pouring that gathers and reaches the depth, so what is commanded is the work and not the happening. The last words then hold three things back: a relative that does not name what is heard, a passive verb that does not name the one who conveys while the speaker is present, and a present tense that says the matter is still running. W-ḥ-y, finally, is a conveying through a narrow, hidden channel, and the whole of his hearing was opened onto a passage no one sees.
